On a windy but beautiful Tuesday afternoon, overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Torrey Pines Golf Course, pro golfers expressed joy and delight on the eve of the Farmers Insurance Open.

Last year’s champion, Matthieu Pavon, the first French golfer to win in La Jolla, put it this way: “It is great to be back — an awesome feeling.”

And Sweden’s Ludwig Aberg, who is ranked 6th worldwide, said, “San Diego is my favorite place in the world. Just looking down at the water gives me a little bit of peace.”

But lurking ahead beyond Wednesday’s start of four days of championship play is the near certainty that Torrey Pines will host yet one more very prestigious golf event on Feb, 13-16. It’s a refugee from the wildfires in Los Angeles. Tiger Woods’ Genesis Invitational, with 70 top pros, will play on the very tough Torrey South Course.

Marty Gorsich of The Century Club, the host organization at Torrey Pines, is ready for the Genesis Invitational, but officials are still reluctant to make a formal announcement because they really do not want to take away from the great event at hand.

The logistics for a second top golf event at Torrey are formidable, including canceling some tee times for local golfers, and keeping the bleachers, dozens of drink stands, snack bars, lavatory facilities and hotel rooms. Hundreds of volunteers are holding on, awaiting a formal announcement expected as the week goes forward.

Temperatures are expected to cooperate for the first tee times at Torrey, with gates opening at 8:30 a.m.  The biggest gallery for Wednesday’s opening round will be on the South Course first tee at 10:40am, with 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama and former Farmers champions Jason Day (winner here in 2015 and 2018) alongside Max Homa, the winner in 2023.

This will be Day’s 13th straight competitive round at Torrey, and he smilingly told reporters, “I never miss a chance to play here even if both courses are very difficult.”
