TVA Urges Power Reduction Amid Cold Snap

On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) issued a call to the public to reduce power consumption for our area on the morning of Wednesday, January 22 from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. This reduction request is voluntary and the power grid remains stables. The requested energy reduction aims to both save customers money and mitigate potential strain on the power grid during the antipated cold weather.

The TVA suggests several strategies for reducing energy use:

Adjust Your Thermostat: Lowering your thermostat to between 65-68 degrees can lead to savings of approximately 3% on your monthly energy bill for each degree reduced. Delay Major Appliances Use: Residents are encouraged to postpone using high-energy appliances like clothes dryers, dishwashers, and ovens during the peak hours. Minimize Non-Essential Use: Turn off lights and unplug or switch off any non-essential appliances. For Commercial Businesses: Turn off lights and office equipment not in use, and adjust heating systems outside of business hours to conserve energy.

The call for energy usage reduction comes as Smith County braces for a significant drop in temperatures overnight. Weather forecasts predict a chilling low in the single digits overnight into Wednesday morning, with temperatures hovering around 3 degrees at the start of the requested energy reduction window.
