Chelsea are serious contenders to sign Alejandro Garnacho this month despite Napoli making progress in talks with Manchester United over a deal.
With United open to a sale this month to raise funds for their own January transfer business, Garnacho has been identified as their best bet for generating income.
Napoli have been leading the race for Garnacho as a replacement for Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has joined Paris Saint-Germain. However, The i Paper has been told Chelsea are not out of the race and may attempt to swoop late in the window once Napoli have made the first move.
Garnacho is not being pushed out the door at Old Trafford by any means, but senior executives are keen to sell given the interest in the 20-year-old. One bid of £40m from Napoli has already been rebuffed. “How much of Alejandro do they think that will get?” one club source questioned.

The information from Italy is that Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is on board, as are sporting director Giovanni Manna and manager Antonio Conte.
The Serie A league leaders don’t want to pay the full amount they received for Kvaratskhelia up front, but they are working on another offer in excess of £50m plus add-ons. Manna has met with United officials this week and talks are expected to be ongoing until the final days of the window, if a deal happens at all.
Whether Garnacho leaves could well influence whether Marcus Rashford departs on loan this month.
The wantaway forward and his team have made Barcelona their top pick, but the Catalan giants must offload players for any incomings to take place.
His wages remain a stumbling block and make it just as likely that Rashford will stay in Manchester until the end of the season at least. Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan are currently out of the running, unless United lower their salary contribution expectations. The club want to recoup a large portion of his £325,000-a-week salary.
Marseille have emerged as a potential left-field option, where Rashford could link up with Mason Greenwood once more. The Ligue 1 side are understood to have the funds available to cover more of Rashford’s wages than other interested parties.
With flop Antony also heading for the exit as a loan to Real Betis nears completion, Ruben Amorim cannot lose three forwards this window without bringing at least one in.
Forget Onana's howler - Man Utd are being set up to fail by Amorim
Read MoreRashford staying put is understood to be no problem for the 27-year-old, despite last month publicly admitting he is ready for a new challenge.
There are no issues with Amorim, the player’s camp insist, and Rashford is doing extra training to work his way back into the Portuguese’s plans.
Any funds generated from Garnacho’s potential sale – 100 per cent profit in the eyes of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), given he is an academy graduate – will almost certainly be reinvested into the squad this month.
Another forward will be sought, likely on loan, with plans to swoop for Viktor Gyokeres in the summer already in the works. A left wing-back has been identified by Amorim as another priority.
PSG’s Nuno Mendes has long been a top target for United, but The i Paper has been told the Portugal international has had a change of heart. Having initially been keen on a move to Old Trafford, he is now considering signing a new long-term deal in the French capital.
As a result, United have turned to other targets. Enquiries have been made with representatives of Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez, Wolves full-back Rayan Ait-Nouri and Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell, yet it seems the club have settled on Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.
Talks are understood to be in the final stages, but there could be a late spanner in the works – Napoli are interested too.
