Who is TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew?

Shou Zi Chew is a businessman, entrepreneur, and the current CEO of TikTok.

Chew was born on January 1, 1983 in Singapore.

After graduating from high school, Chew became a commissioned officer in the Singapore Armed Forces. After serving in the National Service, Chew earned a Bachelor of Economics degree from University College London.

He then worked as a banker at Goldman Sachs in London before joining the venture capital firm DST Global.

In 2010, Chew graduated with a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School in Boston, Massachusetts. While studying at Harvard, he completed a summer internship at another social media company, Facebook.

In 2013, he led a team of investors in ByteDance, which developed both TikTok and its Chinese counterpart, Douyin.

Chew became the chief financial officer of Xiaomi, a smartphone company, in 2015. By 2019, he was serving as Xiamoi’s foreign business president.

In March 2021, Chew joined ByteDance as the company’s chief financial officer. He ended up replacing Kevin A. Mayer as TikTok’s CEO after Mayer resigned less than four months after taking the position.

Before TikTok, Mayer served as the chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International, where he oversaw the company’s streaming services, including Hulu, Disney+, ESPN+, and Hotstar.

Who is Shou Zi Chew’s wife, Vivian Kao?

In 2008, Shou Zi Chew met Vivian Kao, an American of Taiwanese descent.

The duo were both studying at Harvard Business School when their relationship blossomed.

While it’s unclear when exactly the two tied the knot, the couple have been together for over 15 years.

In a November 13, 2020 interview with Harvard Business School Alumni, the duo revealed that their time at Harvard still holds a special place in both of their hearts.

“HBS is what we have in common,” said Kao, who also said both she and Chew’s “closest friends are from [their] HBS years.”

“We are grateful for what HBS has done for us, and we want to provide more opportunities for future generations,” Chew added.

Kao is a businesswoman, investor, and financial expert. She was born in Virginia in 1984.

She graduated from Wellesley College in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics and Chinese Studies.

Like Chew, she also earned an MBA at Harvard Business School, also graduating in 2010.

Kao then served as the general manager of Chope, a real-time restaurant reservation booking platform.

In 2013, she became the chief growth officer of WeLab, Asia’s leading fintech company.

Today, she is the CEO of Tamarind Global, which manages investments and philanthropy for Singaporean families.

She is also an independent, non-executive director of Sun Hung Kai & Co. Limited, an alternative investing firm headquartered in Hong Kong.

Since July 2022, Kao has also served on the Board of Trustees at Wellesley College.

Do Shou Zi Chew and Vivian Kao have any children?

Shou Zi Chew and Vivian Kao currently reside in Singapore with their three kids.

In August 2021, Tatler reported that Chew was purchasing a Good Class Bungalow at Queen Astrid Park, one of the most coveted and affluent residential districts in Singapore.

The luxurious property was on the market for $86 million in Singapore dollars, which amounts to about $64 million in US currency.

While the names of Chew and Kao’s children are unknown, in March 2023, Chew revealed that his kids were six and eight years old.

In November 2023, the family also welcomed a third child, whose name is also unknown.

In a shocking twist, Chew also let the public know that neither of his two older children are allowed to use TikTok.

He did, however, explain that it’s because his children reside outside of the US.

“Tiktok here in the US, if you are below 13, you get a very restrictive version of TikTok,” said Chew.

“In many other countries around the world, we don’t allow users who are below 13,” he added.

When questioned by Congress about the app’s age limits, Chew did say that he would let his children use TikTok if they resided in the US.

“I have seen these news articles. Let me address that,” Chew started, as reported by HITC.

“My kids live in Singapore and in Singapore, we do not have under-13 experience.

“If they lived here in the United States, I would let them use the under-13 experience,” he added.

    Is the US banning TikTok?

On March 23, 2023, Chew made headlines after appearing in front of a US congressional committee.

He was there to address concerns over the social media app’s ties to China and its alleged security and privacy risks, which lawmakers have used to try and ban the app in the US.

TikTok was the top downloaded app in the US in 2021 and 2022, and the most popular website of 2021, even surpassing fellow search engine giant Google.

By the end of 2023, TikTok had been downloaded over 4.1 billion times.

The video-sharing service has over 1 billion monthly active users, with over 150 million monthly users in the US alone – equal to nearly half the nation’s total population.

On March 13, 2024, the House of Representatives passed a bill that led to the US banning TikTok.

The law banning TikTok in the United States came into effect on Sunday, January 19, 2025.

in April 2024, legislation was passed by Congress with bipartisan support, requiring the platform’s Chinese parent company ByteDance to either divest from TikTok or face a ban in the U.S.

ByteDance had until January 19, 2025, to sell TikTok to a US.company or cease operations in the country.

The law was enacted due to national security concerns regarding TikTok’s ties to China and potential data collection or content manipulation.

It prohibits TikTok from operating in the States unless it breaks away from its Chinese parent company.

The Supreme Court unanimously upheld the law on January 17, 2025, rejecting TikTok’s challenge on First Amendment grounds.

The ban also targets third-party companies like cloud-service providers and app stores, which could potentially force TikTok off these platforms.

As a result of this law, TikTok voluntarily shut down its service in the U.S. late on Saturday, January 18, 2025, just before the midnight deadline.

However, returning Republican President Donald Trump, 78, has issued and executive order delaying the ban.

Speaking at a MAGA rally in the Capitol One Arena in Washington D.C. ahead of his inauguration on January 20, 2025, Trump told supporters: “As of today, TikTok is back.

“I said, I’ll approve, but let the United States of America own 50% of TikTok.

“I’m approving on behalf of the United States. So they’ll have a partner, the United States, and they’ll have a lot of bidders.

“And the United States will do what we call a joint venture.”

On January 20, 2025, Trump signed an executive order delaying the enforcement of the ban of TikTok in the US for 90 days, giving ByteDance time to divest from TikTok and salvage the app for Americans.

Trump said: “I guess I have a warm spot for TikTok.”
