Notre Dame is starting to feel desperate in the national championship game vs. Ohio State, and that’s evident by the fake punt Marcus Freeman and his staff dialed up in the 3rd quarter.
After falling behind 21-7 at halftime, the Fighting Irish allowed Quinshon Judkins to roll 70 yards and then score his 3rd touchdown of the night on the first drive of the 3rd quarter. Then, Notre Dame quickly found itself in a 4th-and-2 situation from its own 33-yard line after failing to generate much offense.
Instead of keeping the full offense on the field, the Fighting Irish called a fake punt on a play that saw backup QB Steve Angeli take the snap after sneaking into the formation. Though “sneaking” is used loosely because it appeared that everyone in the building expected the Fighting Irish to try and get a conversion.
To the credit of Notre Dame, the play should have worked with Angeli fitting a pass into a catchable window for Jordan Faison, but Faison was unable to complete the catch. Take a look:
IT’S A FAKE BUT IT IS NO GOOD! BUCKEYES BALL! pic.twitter.com/537dMEZcOb
— Mr Matthew CFB (@MrMatthew_CFB) January 21, 2025Even if the play was close to working, it ultimately failed, and the call itself had many questioning the call to begin with. For many, the fake did not have any element of trickery, and others wondered why Notre Dame would take Riley Leonard and the offense off the field to begin with if they wanted to try and pick up the 2 yards.
Fake punts work best when no one sees them coming. They don't work when everyone does.
— Pete Sampson (@PeteSampson_) January 21, 2025One of the more obvious fake punts to spot. Irish still nearly converted.
— Adam Rittenberg (@ESPNRittenberg) January 21, 2025Maybe the most obvious fake punt ever
— Evan (aka Ebo) (@EBoKnowss) January 21, 2025Just run a play. The fake punt there is pretty obvious even though they almost got it
— Bud Elliott (@BudElliott3) January 21, 2025If you're gonna fake a punt just go for it. Ohio State hasn't been able to stop QB Power all night. That's insane.
— David Ubben (@davidubben) January 21, 2025Why not just line up and run an offensive play man? You huddled up and took forever to run a fake punt with the backup QB as the sniffer.Confusing.
— Brooks Austin (@BrooksAustinBA) January 21, 2025Why would you fake punt instead of just going for it normally. Can’t believe psu lost to these bums
— Tommy (@tommyob95) January 21, 2025Marcus, buddy.Your quarterback hasn’t been stopped (when he runs forward) all night. It’s 4th-and-2 and you’re down 28-7 in the national championship game.Yet in that moment, you believe the best decision is a rollout, throw-on-the-run fake punt…?Bruhhhhhhh ?
— Uncle Mal (@UncleMalBets) January 21, 2025That fake punt was stupid. Just run a play. It’s 4th & 2 and you’re down 21 with over 25 minutes to go. Just run a play man
— Graham Coffey (@GrahamCoffeyDC) January 21, 2025Notre Dame dismantled by social media over failed fake punt Saturday Down South.
