Macy’s set to close historically significant location after 19 years but disappointed shoppers claim ‘sales are scams’

MACY’S is just months away from shutting down a historically significant location that has served shoppers for the past 19 years.

Liquidation sales are underway at the Philadelphia store, but Macy’s customers have called out the chain over a key pricing issue.

Located in the historic Wanamaker building, Macy’s Center City was once one of the top shopping destinations in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

However, Macy’s executives have slated the store for closure in March as part of their Bold New Chapter strategy launched last year.

City officials are citing the closure as an opportunity for economic revitalization in Market East and Center City.

Many of the location’s shelves are empty thanks to signs such as “Entire Store on Sale” and “Nothing Held Back” that litter the Center City Macy’s.

Despite the promising signs, several shoppers have called out the retailer for its unimpressive sales.

    Historic Shopping Destination

Macy’s Center City is located in the Wanamaker building, one of the most architecturally significant US retail spaces.

The building, completed in 1911, housed Wanamaker’s Department Store – the first department store in Philadelphia and one of the first department stores in the US.

It is considered a National Historic Landmark building.

The Wanamaker building includes the famous Wanamaker Eagle, a 2,500-pound bronze statue that was displayed in the original store.

Many left Macy’s last Friday in disappointment after searching for discounted perfumes, according to a local outlet.

An employee shared that cosmetics would go on sale, but the department store chain has yet to announce when the discounts would begin.

Customers were even let down by the retailer’s 10% to 25% off racks.

“I think they need to go down a little bit on those prices,” said one shopper.

Macy’s customers on Facebook similarly expressed their disappointment with the discounts.

“Those sales are scams,” bashed one user. “The price is jacked to the fake suggested retail price to start. Most of the time regular Macy’s prices and sales always started below that MSRP.”

Another Macy’s shopper suggested that the company wouldn’t actually include everything in the store in the sale.

They claimed the chain would likely remove expensive items such as jewelry to a more affluent area to avoid selling it at a discounted price.

    SHIFTING STRATEGIES

The Philadelphia store is just one of 66 “non-go-forward” stores that Macy’s will shutter this year as part of its Bold New Chapter plan, launched in February 2024.

The majority of the 66 locations will close during the first quarter of 2025, Macy’s announced earlier this month.

The closures are part of the chain’s larger strategy to shut down around 150 underperforming stores over the next three years.

As Macy’s closes hundreds of underperforming locations, it will focus its efforts on its 350 “go-forward” stores through the 2026 fiscal year.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” said Tony Spring, Macy’s CEO.

The strategy is focused on reviving the financially struggling department store chain and “return[ing] the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth.”

Macy’s isn’t the only retail giant with mass closures underway.

Twenty-three Walgreens stores are set to close soon as bosses double down on shutdown plans.
