Devoted Powerball player win $1 million jackpot after using ‘special set of numbers’ but rule means they lost $282,500

A DEVOTED Powerball player had her dream come true after winning $1million, but a twist to her jackpot win has left her with less than she expected.

Catherine Martin, 63, scored the life-changing prize after matching all five white balls in the Michigan Lottery’s September 4 Powerball drawing.

Her “special set of numbers” — 07-10-21-33-59 — proved lucky when she purchased the ticket at MD Westland LLC on Cherry Hill Road.

But her windfall came with a bitter pill as $1 million prize was subject to mandatory taxes, leaving her with $717,500 after losing $282,500 to federal and state deductions.

“I play Powerball every week and use a special set of numbers,” Westland local Catherine said, still reeling from the win.

“The day after the drawing, I got a call from my husband while I was at work telling me that he checked my Powerball ticket, and I’d won $1 million!

“I was stunned and had a hard time believing him. Honestly, I still don’t believe it!”

The couple kept their jackpot news under wraps for months, finally surprising their family with the announcement at Christmas.

“We have kept our win a secret until we finally surprised our family on Christmas with the big news!”

Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli praised Martin’s plans to use the winnings for good, including saving for retirement and investing in her grandchildren’s education.

“Lottery games, like Powerball, give players a chance to win prizes that will have a profound impact on their lives,” Shkreli said.

“It is incredibly rewarding to hear how this prize will not only have a positive impact on the winner, but on her grandchildren as well.”

Martin claimed her prize at Michigan Lottery headquarters recently and is already thinking ahead with her newfound fortune.

“With my winnings, I plan to invest and save for retirement and my grandkids’ college funds,” she shared.

Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

While the win is a reminder that dreams can come true, the hefty tax bill proves there’s always a price for hitting the jackpot.

It comes after a Maryland grandmother’s lottery number that she found in a fortune cookie has led her to a $50,000 Powerball win.

Winning the sum in the January 8 draw, the lucky lady says she looks out for ‘signs’ before purchasing tickets.

The Baltimore County resident regularly dines at a restaurant that serves fortune cookies.

It was this tasty after-dinner snack that prompted her to try her luck with the numbers printed inside.

“I said, let me try something different,” she shared.

It was this decision that turned out to be life-changing, with huge consequences.

To her surprise, the retired medical worker matched four out of five numbers and the Powerball.

This earned her a third-tier $50,000 prize, making her the first of four Maryland winners to claim a third-tier Powerball prize in 2025.

The ticket was purchased at a convenience store in Parkville.
