Avian influenza outbreak in Georgia leads to poultry sales suspension and mandatory quarantine.

The recent outbreak of avian influenza in Georgia has precipitated significant disruptions within the state's poultry industry, mandating a temporary suspension of all poultry sales and enforcing a stringent quarantine. Confirmed by both state and federal agencies, the outbreak involves a flock of approximately 45,000 broiler breeders located in Elbert County . This incident marks the first detection of avian influenza in a commercial operation this year and raises concerns regarding the potential economic ramifications for Georgia's poultry sector, which is among the largest in the United States.

The state Department of Agriculture announced Friday that the agency has detected a case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza at a commercial poultry producer in Elbert County, approximately 100 miles (165 kilometers) northeast of Atlanta. The agency suspended all poultry exhibitions, shows, swaps, meets and sales.

The virus has been detected four times in Georgia, but only in backyard flocks previously, including among 13 chickens and ducks earlier this month in Clayton County south of Atlanta.

The Georgia Agriculture Department’s emergency management and response teams were then deployed to the operation on Friday for depopulation, cleaning, disinfecting and disposal, according to the news release. Over the weekend, the teams are expected to continue their work at the site, which had approximately 45,000 broiler breeders when the virus was detected.

In response to this crisis, officials have established a quarantine zone extending 6.2 miles around the affected farm to mitigate further spread of the virus . The measures include halting all poultry exhibitions, shows, swaps, and sales until further notice. Such preventative actions are crucial as they aim to contain the H5N1 strain identified during this outbreak—a strain known for its severe implications on both animal health and market stability . Moreover, surveillance testing will be conducted over two weeks within the quarantine zone to monitor any possible transmission pathways.

The situation underscores not only public health considerations but also highlights vulnerabilities within agricultural supply chains due to zoonotic diseases. The ongoing depopulation efforts coupled with cleaning and disinfection protocols at the affected site epitomize proactive steps taken by authorities to safeguard both animal welfare and human health. As stakeholders remain vigilant during this period of uncertainty, it becomes imperative that comprehensive strategies are developed to address future outbreaks effectively.
