Pittsburgh Steelers need to move on from Mike Tomlin, they’ve made their decision on him, but stats prove he must go

MIKE Tomlin is one of the best coaches in NFL history and deserves to be remembered as such.

The same is true of Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots, despite him being fired last year.

But all good things must come to an end and now seems like the perfect time for Tomlin’s reign to finish.

The 52-year-old has been in charge since 2007 and restored glory back to the city of Pittsburgh.

He took them to two Super Bowls in three years and his Steelers team have always been among the standard bearer in the AFC.

But one of Tomlin’s greatest strengths has also been his team’s downfall in recent years.

Dallas Cowboys icon Jimmy Johnson said on Fox last weekend that things have gone stale in Pittsburgh.

They have gone four years without winning the AFC North title but made the playoffs in three of those.

Tomlin has never overseen a losing season at the Steelers which is a phenomenal achievement.

But in racking up a 10-7 record like they have the last two seasons, they have failed to land a top draft pick.

Pittsburgh haven’t been legitimate contenders since they won the AFC North with a 12-4 record in 2020.

Every time they make the playoffs they never seem to have enough to live with the top teams in the league.

They haven’t won a playoff game in eight years now.

The last four playoff appearances have all resulted in being bounced out at the wild card stage.

And worryingly they didn’t look like winning any of their last three.

This season they looked set to challenge the Kansas City Chiefs for the top seed in the AFC.

But they ended the season with five straight defeats, including to Patrick Mahomes’ side.

    NFL division round schedule

Sat 18 Jan, 4.30 pm ET (ESPN/ABC) – Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs

Sat 18 Jan, 8 pm ET (Fox) – Washington Commanders at Detroit Lions

Sun 19 Jan, 3 pm ET (NBC) – Los Angeles Rams at Philadelphia Eagles

Sun 19 Jan, 6.30 pm ET (CBS) – Baltimore Ravens at Buffalo Bills

Against the three playoff teams they faced in that five-game stretch, they never looked like getting a result.

The Philadelphia Eagles handled them 27-13 and the Chiefs were comfortable 29-10 winners in their backyard.

A 37-14 regular-season loss to the Baltimore Ravens in December was then followed with an incredibly similar 28-14 playoff defeat.

Tomlin admitted that big changes are coming at all levels in Pittsburgh.

Whether he is one of those to make way for a new approach remains to be seen.
