With just ten minutes left against Southampton on Thursday night, Manchester United fans must have had a horrible feeling of deja vu. 

Here we go again. A great 2-2 away draw at Liverpool was followed by a gritty penalty shootout win over Arsenal in the FA Cup, and here United are, 1-0 down to bottom-of-the-table Southampton in the following match at Old Trafford. 

It looked for all the world like the latest false dawn for Ruben Amorim’s inconsistent team. Only United could get two results like that, and then lose at home to a Southampton side with only one league win all season.

But thankfully for United, one of their few shining lights this season got them out of jail. 

A 12-minute hat-trick from Amad Diallo turned the match on its head and got United the three points.

But it was far from a vintage performance. And United could easily have been two or three down before the 22-year-old levelled the match after 82 minutes. 

The win means United ended Matchday 21 in 12th place with 26 points.

They are now ten points clear of the relegation zone, but 12 points away from the top four. And probably the most troubling part of it all for United is they still have a negative goal difference of -3.

One of the teams still above Ruben Amorin’s United team is Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Seagulls defeated Ipswich Town 2-0 at Portman Road on Thursday, ending a run of eight Premier League matches without a win. A run that dates back to the 23rd of November.

But despite going for nearly two months without a league win, Brighton are five points better off than Manchester United. 

Fabian Hurzeler’s team finished Matchday 21 in 9th place in the Premier League. The Seagulls have 31 points from 21 matches.

Hurzeler acknowledged the 2-0 win over Ipswich wasn’t a great performance. But after a difficult period, the 31-year-old Brighton head coach will take a win any way it comes. 

Goals from Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter sealed the victory, with the win taking Brighton above Fulham and Brentford.   

It could be a win that gets Brighton’s season back on track. They may well have gone eight games without a win, but they have only lost four Premier League matches this season.

Only Liverpool and Arsenal have lost fewer. 

The facts are that Brighton are having an outstanding season. The only downside is they have drawn ten of their 21 matches, more than any other team in the Premier League.

If they can start to convert some of those draws into victories, a place in Europe next season is a real possibility.

The Southampton performance proved that Man Utd are still in a mess.

If you put aside the result and look at the performance, it was yet another uninspiring effort summed up by Anthony’s shocking open goal miss not long after coming on as a second-half substitute.

Compared to the performance at Anfield, this was the exact opposite. United looked flat. And they had to rely on the brilliance of one of their star players, rather than a team effort.

As for Brighton, they may have managed to end an eight-match winless run at Portman Road, but it was far from a vintage performance. 

There are better performances to come from Hurzeler’s team, but whether it will happen at Old Trafford is anybody’s guess, as anything can happen here.

The away team has scored in Manchester United’s last four home Premier League matches.

Furthermore, United have conceded in their previous eleven in all competitions. Their last clean sheet came against Everton on December 1st.

With United playing a more attacking brand of football under Ruben Amorim, clean sheets are far from assured. And with Brighton having only failed to score in two matches out of 25 in all competitions this season, it’s highly unlikely the Red Devils will be able to shut the Seagulls out on Sunday.

But we do think that Manchester United will win. So it’s a no brainer to throw in both teams to score as well.

Only in Man Utd’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle did over 2.5 not win. And anybody who watched that match knows that there should have been plenty more than the two goals that were eventually scored.

Amad Diallo to score anytime

Manchester United has a new star at Old Trafford. Amad Diallo almost single handedly saved United from an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Southampton. He now has six goals and six assists in the Premier League this season. 

The 22-year-old’s match-winning hat-trick may have papered over the obvious cracks. But his continuing emergence is giving United fans hope and optimism. And it allows the long suffering Old Trafford faithful to forget about the team’s shortcomings, for now, at least.

Amad is 23/20 to score or assist. That may be the less risky option. But in his current form, wouldn’t it be just typical if he backed up his match-winning performance with another goal against the Seagulls.
