Dabo Swinney details why Clemson went after transfer portal DE Will Heldt

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney recently made waves by signing three transfer players, including standout defensive end Will Heldt from Purdue.

Heldt, a 6-foot-6, 265-pound athlete, brings significant experience and production, having recorded 56 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, and five sacks in his sophomore season. With two years of eligibility remaining, Heldt addresses an immediate need for the Tigers, who struggled to find consistency opposite T.J. Parker last season.

The decision to bring in Heldt was driven in part by unexpected changes in Clemson’s recruiting class. The Tigers had initially secured commitments from two elite 2025 defensive ends, Bryce Davis and Ari Watford, but Davis flipped to Duke, leaving a key gap. Compounding the issue, Watford suffered a torn ACL during his senior year.

“We didn’t anticipate signing a defensive line portal guy,” Swinney explained. “But when you lose a top recruit late, you have to adjust. We needed a high-level player, and we got the guy we wanted.”

Heldt’s addition is expected to immediately boost Clemson’s defensive front as the Tigers prepare for the 2025 season.
