Third place takes on first when Atalanta hosts Napoli on Matchday 21 of the Serie A season. 

Atalanta has 43 points from their 20 matches. They have just run out of form at the wrong time, with three consecutive draws seeing them fall from top spot below Napoli and Inter Milan.

Napoli is on a five-match winning run. The winning streak has seen them reclaim the top spot they held earlier in the season. Gli Azzurri has 47 points from their 20 matches. 

Also in the mix at the top of Serie A is Inter Milan. With a game in hand on both Atalanta and Napoli, the Black and Blues have 44 points from 19 matches. 

Simone Inzaghi’s team are also the defending champions and the 8/15 favourites to win the title again this season. Napoli is 9/4, with Atalanta on 5/1.

Onto the match, and Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta team has stuttered since Christmas, picking up just three points from three outings. 

In fairness, they have had a tough run of matches. A 1-1 away draw at Lazio ended a remarkable eleven-match Serie A winning streak – a run that started with a 5-1 win over Genoa on October 5th.

That was followed by a 2-0 defeat away to Inter Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana semi-final on January 2nd.

La Dea was then held to a disappointing 0-0 draw away at Udinese last Saturday. That was a very out-of-character performance, with Atalanta failing to score for only the second time in Serie A this season.

A 1-1 Tuesday-night home stalemate with Serie A draw specialists Juventus was Atalanta’s latest result.

Getting back to winning ways for Atalanta will be difficult against Napoli. 

Gli Azzurri is on a five-match winning streak, their second of the season. Furthermore, Antonio Conte’s team has won seven of their last eight in Serie A. 

The latest winning streak started with a 3-1 win away at Udinese in mid-December. That was followed by another pre-Christmas away win over Genoa (2-1). 

Over the holiday period, Conte’s team defeated Venezia 1-0 in Naples and they followed that up with a 3-0 win away at Fiorentina.

Their most recent match was a 2-0 home win over Verona on Sunday. 

Except for the Fiorentina match, the rest of the wins came against mid to lower-placed teams. But these are the sort of matches that teams who want to win the league need to be winning, and that’s exactly what Napoli is doing.

The league leaders have been dealt a massive blow this week with the news that Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is set to seal a big-money January transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. T

The Georgian winger has played a vital role in Napoli’s rise to the top of the table with five goals and three assists. 

Manager Antonio Conte will have to carry on without his mercurial winger. But the former Chelsea boss has already adapted the team to cope without Victor Osimhen, so will also likely find a way to do so without the services of Kvaratskhelia.
