He has revealed it would be a “logical step” to add an 18th tie to the calendar.

The league chief is expected to hold talks with players over the plans this offseason.

The 32 NFL teams play 17 games a year between September and January.

The best 14 then head into the postseason, before the Super Bowl in February.

Each side gets a bye week during the campaign for a rest.

“If we continue to focus on the safety, I think 18 is a potential,” he told Bloomberg.

“We would take a preseason game away.

“So we would keep within that 20-game framework.

“We actually started at 14 games and six preseason.

“We went to 16 and four, and now 17 and three.

“So 18 and two is a logical step.

“But we would only do that with the players.”

Goodell was also asked about the chances of NFL expansion team.

There has been talk of going beyond 32 franchises.

    NFL division round schedule

Sat 18 Jan, 4.30 pm ET (ESPN/ABC) – Houston Texans at Kansas City Chiefs

Sat 18 Jan, 8 pm ET (Fox) – Washington Commanders at Detroit Lions

Sun 19 Jan, 3 pm ET (NBC) – Los Angeles Rams at Philadelphia Eagles

Sun 19 Jan, 6.30 pm ET (CBS) – Baltimore Ravens at Buffalo Bills

It would mean forming an entirely new conference overseas.

The league is set to host a record eight games outside of the United States in 2025.

That includes trips to London, Germany and the newly-introduced Madrid.

“Our hope would be at some stage to get to 16 games in the next few years,” added Goodell.

“We have 32 now. We think that’s a really good number for the NFL.

“But also, we would probably look at it potentially as building out by divisions as opposed to individual teams.

“You have a lot of issues with a team that’s in, say Europe, and having to travel over playing, games and teams going back over to Europe to play

“I think the competitive issues still need to be worked out.”
