ESPN updates Clemson basketball NCAA Tournament hopes in new March Madness forecast

With a 6-1 start in ACC play, the Clemson Tigers are in position to reach the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.

Brad Brownell’s team is No. 36 in the NET rankings and is 4-4 in games against Quad 1 and Quad 2 teams. Just as importantly (at least in the eyes of the selection committee), they don’t have any “bad” losses to Quad 3 or Quad 4 teams, going 10-0 in those games.

As for who and where the Tigers might end up playing in the NCAA Tournament come March, ESPN’s Joe Lunardi updated his latest Bracketology projections Friday morning.

The veteran March Madness prognosticator has Clemson as a No. 8 seed in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. If the tournament started today, Lunardi sees the Tigers opening with No. 9 seed UCLA in a matchup in Lexington, Ky., in the West Regional.

In Lunardi’s update, Clemson is in the same bracket as the Tennessee Volunteers — the last of Lunardi’s four No. 1 seeds. The top overall seed Auburn Tigers, No. 2 overall seed Duke Blue Devils and No. 3 overall seed Iowa State Cyclones were Lunardi’s other top seeds.

Lunardi currently awards five NCAA Tournament bids to the ACC. Aside from Clemson and Duke, Louisville is a projected No. 6 seed, with North Carolina and Pitt as projected No. 9 seeds.

Clemson (14-4 overall) plays at Pitt (14-4) Saturday at noon ET. The game will be televised on The CW Network.

The Tigers defeated Georgia Tech, 70-59, earlier this week. Jaeden Zackery had 21 points to lead Clemson in the win in Atlanta, with Ian Schieffelin adding 16 and Chase Hunter scoring 14.
