Youth Impact, Consistent Connor, Trade Buzz Grows, Time for a Bold Move? and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks lost last night in Nashville. If your concern at this point is lottery balls — which I wouldn’t blame you if it is — then that’s a good result (Nashville currently sits third in the order and have three picks in the first round in 2025). But when you look at the GameScore Impact Card from the game, you’ll note that the top line was easily the Blackhawks’ best. And two of the guys on that line are part of the future. Throw in a good, physical game from Colton Dach (five hits, one shot on net, one takeaway and one blocked shot in 11:39) and the youth movement continues to make a positive impact at the NHL level. Which is encouraging.

    — HockeyStatCards (@hockeystatcards.com) January 16, 2025 at 10:04 PM Let’s take a moment to consider the new-look top line last night. Tyler Bertuzzi — Connor Bedard — Frank Nazar were really good. Their speed and skill complemented each other well, they played well in all three zones and the data at Natural Stat Trick has them at the top of the Blackhawks’ sheet in expected Goals For percentage. Look at how Nazar’s 5-on-5 numbers stack up next to Bedard and Bertuzzi… and then look at the time on ice difference. Very impressive night from Nazar. I think one of the elements of Nazar’s game that’s surprised a lot of Blackhawks fans since his recall this season has been his really good defensive work. When he was sent to Rockford to start the season, Nazar was slotted on the top power play and penalty kill — valuable experience many expected him to get. But he’s been able to help both special teams units at the NHL level as well, and he got this great short-handed scoring chance last night thanks to good work by Jason Dickinson and his blazing, elite speed.

    — Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) January 17, 2025 They put this graphic on the CHSN broadcast during the first period last night. Pretty remarkable that Bedard came into the game with identical numbers at home and on the road in his young NHL career. You can add one goal and three shots on net to the box from last night. With the Blackhawks in Nashville, of course they had country music star Dierks Bentley stop by the room before the game to deliver the lineup.

    — Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) January 17, 2025 The trade wind are blowing in circles around Chicago right now, and it understandably appears as though the NHL’s vultures are sizing up the corpse at 1901 W. Madison with the trade deadline less than two months away. Earlier this week, Taylor Hall addressed the understanding that his time in Chicago may end before March 7. On Thursday we got a double helping of trade rumors, with both Seth Jones and Lukas Reichel getting name-dropped by notable insiders. So strap in and get ready for what might be a wild few weeks… With that in mind, I like this piece from Mark Lazerus this morning at The Athletic. And I’m fully in favor of the Blackhawks making that big swing sooner than later. He throws out a package of Nazar, Kevin Korchinski and Toronto’s 2025 first-round pick for Elias Pettersson. My gut says it might take more than that — with a more established NHL player included in the deal. But I’m absolutely exploring a blockbuster if I’m Kyle Davidson here. GMKD told us two years ago he was staggering the draft capital he was collecting so he had assets to make a big deal when it was time. Are the Blackhawks in “go for it” territory right now? No. Would bringing in an elite offensive player like Pettersson change that timeline? Abso-freaking-lutely.

If Elias Pettersson, a 26-year-old superstar signed through 2032, really is available, the Blackhawks should be moving heaven and Earth — and just about any player in the organization — to pair him with Connor Bedard. My column: www.nytimes.com/athletic/606…[image or embed]

    — Mark Lazerus (@marklazerus.bsky.social) January 17, 2025 at 7:39 AM Former Blackhawks head coach Luke Richardson was at the Sens game last night for their Bell Hockey Talks night. Their Do It For Daron Foundation does tremendous work to help young people deal with mental health. I know he probably would have loved to join his wife for the night in Ottawa the last couple years… I’m fairly confident he would also love to not be available to drop the puck with his nephew for the photo opp. It’s good to see him smiling in a hockey rink. Hopefully he’s back behind a bench somewhere soon.

Tonight, Jakob Chychrun and his aunt and uncle, Stephanie and Luke Richardson, partook in puck drop for the @Senators' #HockeyTalks Night. The Richardsons founded Do It For Daron (@difdroyal) in honor of their daughter Daron (Jakob's cousin) who lost her life to suicide in 2010. pic.twitter.com/r1DW8zX8AT

    — Washington Capitals (@Capitals) January 17, 2025 The NHL and Fanatics dropped the jerseys for the Stadium Series this season. Again, it will be Detroit (wearing… red) at Columbus (Ohio… who will be wearing blue…) in what will look like an NHL episode of Marvel’s “What If” series on Disney+. I think they absolutely nailed it with the Blue Jackets’ jerseys. I like the size of the logo on the side of the Red Wings’ buckets (football helmet-esque). But the fact that the team from Michigan appears to be cosplaying as Buckeyes doesn’t sit well here. At all.

The Chicago Bears have interviewed roughly 450 candidates for their head coaching vacancy. A report on Thursday indicates it’s down to two candidates. The Cubs unveiled new alternate jerseys for the 2025 season and I might go broke… they’re incredible. The Bulls dug themselves into the same old hole, it’s way past time to blow it up. Finally, the great Bob Uecker passed away on Thursday. He was an icon. A legitimate legend in our midst. When I was covering the 2018 NLCS between the Dodgers and Brewers, the Milwaukee media availability was Christian Yelich, Craig Counsell and… Bob Uecker. And the entire media room (which looked like a college classroom in Milwaukee) was crying we were laughing so hard with the stories he told. I really did want him to replace Joe Buck in the booth for the 2016 World Series (which is why I started the online petition to make that happen). The world is a better place and baseball’s fans love the game more because of Bob Uecker. RIP to the best. If you have 18 minutes today, here’s his Hall of Fame induction speech.
