The two signed a memorandum of understanding after a meeting between Swedish and Korean business representatives in Seoul.
A specific aim is to construct Sweden’s first SMR power plant by 2032. The facility will have two reactors, and will supply electricity to AI data centres as well as the Swedish grid. This partnership marks Samsung C&T’s latest step toward expanding its SMR business across Europe, and follows an agreement to build SMRs in Romania signed in July.
Kärnfull has already completed evaluation work on possible sites in southeastern Sweden, including municipalities such as Valdemarsvik and Nyköping.
Samsung and Kärnfull will now collaborate on next steps such as technology selection, environmental impact assessments and project financing.
Sweden’s government has committed to expanding its nuclear energy infrastructure, unveiling a roadmap to add at least2.5GW of capacity by 2035.
Beyond Sweden, the collaboration is expected to look at supplying SMRs to energy parks and SMR campuses across the Nordic region.
