Greeley area residents encouraged to limit time outdoors when cold snap arrives this weekend

Greeley area residents can expect a chilly start to the weekend with 1 to 3 inches of snow coming in Friday alongside frigid winter temperatures that will struggle to rise above the mid-teens.

Snow will move into the mountains and lower elevations Friday afternoon, according to Kenley Bonner of the National Weather Service office in Boulder. There is potential for an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow on Sunday night, Bonner added.

The snow isn’t the biggest factor in this sudden arctic shift, however, as the real danger will come from the cold.

Greeley residents can expect a low of about 10 degrees on Friday night. This will be followed by a brief warm-up period on Saturday when temperatures get up to the low 20s before plunging to -10 Saturday night. From then until Tuesday, the National Weather Service expects temperatures to struggle to get past the mid-teens.

Bonner said there aren’t any concerns about mixed precipitation or a significant ice risk, but it could still happen. However, she still expects slippery roads that will create hazardous travel conditions. Bonner warned residents to limit time outside.

“It’s going to be really cold,” Bonner said. “Definitely prepare your car and make sure you have a full tank of gas if you have to go anywhere and to keep your car running if you are stopped somewhere. Prepare your house if possible, and leave your cabinets open to get heat to your pipes.”

The city of Greeley has also made preparations for the incoming arctic blast by preparing snow plows and ensuring that emergency services will operate as usual this weekend. The city will also make resources available to the homeless population by setting up two overnight shelters for anyone who needs shelter.

People 18 and older can seek shelter at the United Way Cold Weather Shelter, 870 28th St. Families will be welcome at the Guadalupe Center, 1442 N. 11th Ave.

Both shelters will open at 12 p.m. Saturday and remain open until 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to provide shelter from the extreme cold. The city will also activate additional services and transportation assistance if necessary.

Those needing help with shelter may contact the city’s Homeless Solutions Outreach Team at 970-351-5005.

Weld County will also be providing shelters for any stranded drivers who emergency services encounter across the county’s several communities, including Ault, Windsor, Fort Lupton, Keenesburg, Roggen and Nunn.

Xcel Energy announced Thursday it will monitor the weather as crews will be staged across the state to respond to any possible power outages.

Additionally, Xcel urged residents to stay safe by avoiding any downed power lines, ensuring gas meters and vents are clear from snow and ensuring space heaters are not damaged before use. About 65,000 home fires are attributed to faulty heating equipment, Xcel reported. Residents should call 1-800-895-1999 to report any downed power lines or electrical issues. If needed, Xcel business customers should call 1-800-481-4700.
