OtterBox Symmetry iPhone 16 Pro Max Case REVIEW

Stylish and Slim yet protective shell from Otterbox for your iPhone 16 Pro Max

When picking an iPhone case, the process can sometimes feel like the Goldilocks story.  I have never understood those who trust an uncased, unprotected iPhone because it feels like one is living on the edge of catastrophe at every moment; as a former heavy-armor, waterproof case user, I grew to understand the limits of bulky, heavy, and sometimes obstructive cases.  The just-right case type has emerged as a lightweight, tightly-gripped, bumper-style case that provides good access to the phone’s features while protecting from drops, spills, dumps, and glancing blows.

The OtterBox Symmetry Series Ultraslim case with MagSafe is an example of a middle-ground iPhone shell.  The case arrived in a clean, white-colored,  4 3/16 inches wide by 7 1/16 inches tall by 11/16 inches tall hanging-style retail case.  The yellow otter logo and white-font product name were displayed along the cover’s top, while the lower segment provided four product features: Ultra-Slim, 3X as many drops as military standard, MagSafe functionality, and one extra feature depending on the version selected (silky soft finish, premium responsive buttons).  The main feature of the cover was the large trapezoidal cutout display of the case, which will allow you to view the colorful plastic shell, camera cutout, and to interact with the case’s buttons and backing material.  I prefer this presentation method over flat images, ink outline drawings, or colorful photographs.

The side panels listed the Symmetry name and provided recycling information on one side and MagSafe information on the other.  The bottom panel provided product trademark information, company contact information, and a UPC barcode.  The rear panel proved to be a bit busier than the other panels.  The upper segment provided four product features and detailed the MagSafe functionality, built-in lanyard anchor, recycled materials (40-45% depending on version), and raised camera/screen protection.  The lower segment provided the same information in multiple languages.  I loved the inclusion of the various languages, but I would have preferred that all of the languages have equal spacing.  Lastly, the lower segment listed various product manufacturing labels.

I opened the lower panel, pressed the cardboard hanger at the top of the box, and slid the inner box down and out of the main packaging.  The 1.3 ounce Symmetry Ultra Slim case, measured 3 1/4 inches wide by 6 9/16 inches tall by 9/16 inches thick. The inner surface of the case had a vibrant white MagSafe ring and a smooth vibrantly colored plastic backing (Maroon and purple were tested).  I pressed the right edge of my phone into the case, then the top, left side and bottom edge. I immediately noticed the protection the 1/16 inches raised screen bezel afforded to the screen.  The right side of the case had a 1/4 inches long by 1/8 inches tall action button, dual 15/32 inches long by 1/8 inches tall volume buttons, an etched OtterBox name, and an embedded lanyard port.  The left side panel had a 23/32 inches long by 1/8 inches tall power button, a U-shaped 1 1/8 inches long by 5/16 inches capture button cutout (no top screen protecting segment), and a lower lanyard cutout.

The lower panel provided a centralized 1/2 inches wide by 1/4 inches tall oval-shaped USB-C cutout and flanking speaker port cutouts: 7/16 inches long by 1/8 inches tall and 5/8 inches long by 1/8 inches tall.  The smooth back panel of the maroon-colored Symmetry case had a refreshing texture/feel and I appreciated that the matte surface avoided lint or fingerprints.  Like with the screen mentioned above, the 1 1/2 inches wide by 1 9/16 inches tall camera cutout had a 1/8 inch raised protective rim.  It is important to note that the raised border started at the phone’s back plate and extended ~1/32 of an inch above the camera.  The raised rim felt more shallow than in other cases, and I was a bit concerned about the potential for camera damage. The protective layer prevented glancing blows against the sides of the camera and allowed me to rest my phone on its back on my table without directly touching the camera.  Similarly, I could utilize the screen’s protective ring to rest the phone face down without damaging the touchscreen.

I liked the texture and feel of the case, the lightweight design (9.2 ounces installed), lanyard cutouts, and the tactile/responsive volume, power, and action buttons.  Each button provided a reactive click and recoil without impeding the iPhone’s functions.  The USB-C port was easy to access, and the speaker cutouts did not block the iPhone’s output.  If desired, you can install a screen protector for added support; the case will accommodate standard-sized options.  I have a few critiques regarding the case. First, the U-shaped camera control cutout allowed for easy button access but reduced screen protection. Several reviews suggested this led to fractured screen protectors at that edge. A raised button similar to the power button may be an optimized upgrade for the case. Second, the smooth back may be a bit slippery at times, especially in wet weather, or if hands are damp/sweaty. Third, the camera depression was a bit shallow and could benefit from 1/32-1/16 inches increase in size.

After testing the case for the last 2 weeks, I have not had any issues with the phone/case.  To test a typical drop scenario, I placed the phone onto my lap and stood up from my kitchen table.  I recreated this a few times and found no damage to the screen, the case, or the phone that I could detect.  I liked the smooth surface of the maroon case but gravitated more toward the raised, grippy feel of the purple version.  I look forward to testing the cactus leather Symmetry case next, as it appears to have combined the best factors of both versions of the case. Neither version proved compatible with my Tesla Model Y 2021 wireless charging pad (most cases do not) but it did well with my MagSafe chargers. The connection was secure and reliable with car and desk-style MagSafe bases. Lastly, both cases fit nicely within my Nite-Ize XL phneo holster.

If you want a reliable, protective, bumper-style case, consider picking up an Otterbox Symmetry case for your iPhone 16 Pro Max.  The sub $40 price is more than fair, with at least eleven color choices to consider. However, the soft-touch purple case may be a more secure selection for a few extra dollars. You can gain the functionality and portability of the Symmetry line with added grip control for on-the-go utility. The case should provide adequate protection for average, everyday threats while providing a classy visual touch. Of the two, the soft touch case seemed to be the more reliable version of the Symmetry case line.
