Rep. Mike Levin said Wednesday that Republican calls for attaching conditions to disaster aid for citizens harmed by the Los Angeles wildfires are “shameful.”
“Some House Republicans are threatening to withhold disaster aid to California unless certain unknown conditions are met. There’s even talk about attaching disaster aid to an increase in the debt ceiling,” Levin said in a speech on the House floor.
“It’s unacceptable and downright shameful to use the suffering of Californians in need — or anyone in need — to solve your internal political disputes,” he said.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, has cited “water resources management, forest management mistakes, all sorts of problems” as reasons for conditions on disaster aid to California residents.
But Levin, a Democrat who represents north coastal San Diego and south Orange counties, said the federal government has never placed “politically driven conditions on disaster aid to our own citizens.”
“This is a bad faith effort to use California as a punching bag. This is about the promotion of half-truths, conspiracy theories, and outright lies,” Levin said.
Wildfires driven by 100 mph Santa Ana winds have killed 25 and destroyed over 10,000 structures in Los Angeles, Altadena and other areas of Los Angeles County over the past week.
