Jan. 6: A day of love?
As the country prepares to inaugurate Donald Trump as our 47th president next week, let us never forget that Jan. 6, 2021, was not “a day of love” as Trump and his followers have been able to reinvent the Capitol attack on that day four years ago. For my wife, Kathy, and I, Jan. 6, 1979, was our wedding day and will always be a reminder of our love together.
As very well described in Dan Barry and Alan Feuer’s article in the Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025, New York Times, Trump and his many loyalists have spent the last four years slowly twisting the actual events of that day in American history. Many of us saw live on national TV four years ago hundreds of angry people storm the Capitol building, smash windows, beat up Capitol police, and break in to congressional offices. These people were not “patriots” as Trump and his followers have labeled them but rioters who were there to try to prevent the certification of the presidential election results for their leader (Donald Trump).
Still the actual facts of from that day include:
• Lawmakers huddled for their safety in secret areas.
• Those storming the Capitol shouted “hang Mike Pence” and might have if he had been found.
• Mr. Trump did little to stop the protesters, and when he did ask them to leave after several hours he tweeted “We love you” and “Remember this day forever.” One-hundred forty Capitol police officers were injured during the assault on the Capitol building that day.
• About half of the almost 1,600 defendants from the attack on the Capitol have pleaded guilty, about 200 have been sentenced, and some are serving prison time.
• The leftist group “antifa” never had anything to do with the Capitol mob as was repeatedly reported by Trump allies.
• The FBI had nothing to do with organizing the mob as Tucker Carlson (Fox news) has asserted.
The NY Times article outlines a more complete description of the conspiracy theories and how Jan. 6 has evolved into the martyrdom and alternative version of history for Trump.
All in all, let us never forget what really happened on Jan. 6, 2021. Every Jan. 6 is a day of love for my wife and me, but not the United States anymore.
