AN EXPERT mechanic has warned car owners they risk cracking their windscreen with a popular de-icing hack.
What’s more, he suggests a simple hands-free solution that costs a mere $5.
As reported by ABC13, Stephen Konyndyk, a mechanic who owns Endurance Auto Repair and Tire located in Lynchburg, Virginia, offered motorists a handful of top tips to keep their car in tip-top shape in the winter.
One of the best ways is by making sure a vehicle’s tire tread is plenty deep – which will give better grip on icy and wet surfaces.
Indeed, we previously revealed an easy method to check tread depth by using an item you might already have in your wallet.
Perhaps equally important is visibility, which is mainly achieved through the windshield – which must be kept clear and ice-free.
One quick method to de-ice a windscreen is by adding a de-icer to the wiper fluid – such as Rain-X, which can be purchased for less than $5 at Walmart.
Before propping up the wipers, Konyndyk warned that you may want to reconsider.
He said: “What will happen is that this is spring-loaded.
“If the wind picks up or we get some ice, and it weighs the wiper down, some cars it’s easier than others, but when they smack they can actually crack the windscreen.”
Konyndyk even has a hack for when a car door freezes shut in the cold.
He said: “A little bit of silicone spray on a paper towel or rag, simply wipe along the rubber seals, helps prevent water from freezing and sticking.”
He said even the most experienced drivers can struggle in the snow if their vehicle isn’t taken care of, so it’s important to get ahead of it before the weather hits.
This comes as drivers were shown how to use a simple DIY trick to keep their headlights clean this winter and save up to $150 on mechanic costs.
One major concern for car owners during the winter months is headlights becoming dull and yellowed over time, which reduces their effectiveness.
However, the average cost of a headlight cleaning service and restoration can be between $100 to $150 per pair of headlights.
But cloudy and dirty lights can be easily restored without forking out on the professionals – if you have the right know-how.
Elsewhere, drivers have also been warned over pouring hot water on an ice-cold car.
The intense temperature difference could crack the windshield, making an instant repair necessary.
Instead, winter drivers should simply pull out an ice scraper to carve through the frost, Edwards told ABC affiliate WAAY.
Scrapers can be found in nearly every supermarket, from Walmart to Target.
However, drivers can actually snag an $8 one from Amazon without even leaving their homes.
