While Josh Gad was nominated for a Tony for his performance in The Book of Mormon on Broadway, the experience was a difficult one—and now the actor is blaming the musical's director, Casey Nicholaw.
According to the Frozen star's new memoir, In Gad We Trust, Nicholaw's "inexplicable behavior" created an "awful environment," Entertainment Weekly reported.

"Our director, Casey, was a genuinely brilliant creative visionary and truly helped to make the show the giant hit it would go on to become. What he lacked, however, are social skills and anything resembling team-building leadership," Gad wrote.
"To the best of my knowledge, he either did not like that I predated him on the project or that he was saddled with me, but to say he made every day completely unpleasant would be an understatement," Gad continued.
Gad also noted Nicholaw's "complete lack of leadership" the day after The Book of Mormon won nine Tonys.
"We entered the theater to three pages of notes hung up on the bulletin board proclaiming how disappointed he was in all of us and the awful state of the show," Gad wrote. "That week, he brought us all in for rehearsals and proceeded to call me out in scene after scene telling me that every choice I was making was wrong."

Despite the way he was allegedly treated, Gad explained that he "would never have put any of this in writing had it not been for a highly public and deeply hurtful quote he made about me almost 13 years after we worked together."
The quote in question was given by Nicholaw to the The New York Times for a profile in which the director criticized Gad's approach to comedy, saying, "Josh's comedy basically just says Watch me. Love me. Josh is just out there."
Despite their history, Gad called Nicholaw a "super talented and a creative visionary," but noted that he "has never once apologized for his inexplicable behavior and the awful environment he created in an otherwise loving space... Maybe he’ll read this and apologize, but after 13 years, I’m not holding my breath. You know where to reach me, Casey!"
Parade reached out to Nicholaw's rep for comment but did not immediately hear back.
