What is Lemon8?
Lemon8 is a social media app that is like a cross between Instagram and Pinterest, and is the sister app of TikTok. Both apps were developed by the China-based company ByteDance, who also own the video editing app, CapCut, and the photo/art editing app, Hypic.

Lemon8 launched in Japan in 2020, while it hit app stores in the U.S. in 2023.

If TikTok is banned in the United States, Lemon8 will also be banned, communications director for the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Christopher Krepich, told Forbes in January 2025.
The House Committee on Energy and Commerce advanced the bill that would ban TikTok, with President Joe Biden signing the potential ban into law in April 2023.
The bill gave ByteDance 270 days to sell TikTok, and failure to do so would result in the app being prohibited from U.S. app stores, as well as "internet hosting services" that support the app, per CNN.
In December 2024, President-elect Donald Trump asked the Supreme Court to pause the potential ban from going into effect until after he takes office on Jan. 20, 2025.
Administration officials have long expressed concerns that Chinese authorities could force the tech company to give them U.S. user data or influence Americans via the app, according to Associated Press.

Is TikTok shutting down in 2025?
There is a chance that TikTok will shut down in 2025 if ByteDance does not sell the platform to an approved buyer by Jan. 19.

If TikTok is banned, it doesn't necessarily mean the app will disappear from phones or its 170 million users will be punished for trying to access it, as Kate Ruane, director of the Free Expression Project at the Center for Democracy and Technology, explained to NPR.
"I think the biggest obvious result of this law going into effect is that … it's going to require more technical savvy to access TikTok," Ruane told the outlet in January 2025. "And that in and of itself is going to be too big of a barrier for lots and lots of people to continue to access TikTok or to continue to try to use TikTok as a service."
Are people still using Lemon8?
As of publication (and before a decision for the potential ban has been made), people are still using Lemon8.
The app had one million daily active users and 12.5 million global monthly active users, according to market intelligence company Sensor Tower, per AP.
