Playing Nice filming locations – Cornwall sites used for ITV drama

Playing Nice is a new ITV series telling the heart-wrenching tale of babies switched at birth and the parental dilemma of which child to keep.

Based on the best-selling novel by JP Delaney, the original story about the wrangle between the two couples was set in London but this television adaptation has moved the drama to the rugged, sweeping coastline of Cornwall.

Kitty Kaletsky, the show’s executive producer said: “The book is actually set in London, so us relocating the story to a breathtaking part of the country felt really important to kind of elevate it both aesthetically and in terms of its themes.

“The story is about being on the edge. It’s about getting in too deep and, not to kind of mix metaphors too much, but Cornish people do literally live on the edge of our country, and they are surrounded by water in a way that our four sort of feel like they’re drowning.

So, thematically and visually, it felt really important to embrace the localarea.”

The four-part series, starring James Norton, Niamh Algar, James McArdle and Jessica Brown Findlay, started airing on Sunday 5 January and will conclude on Monday 13 Janaury.

Norton, who was an executive producer on the show, said: “I love filming in Cornwall!

“It’s been an amazing experience… on the second day offilming James McArdle [plays Miles] and I had to surf for a scene which was really fun.

“We had the dramatic Cornish landscape to work with and we filmed on some of the most beautiful cliffs and coastline in the country.

“St Ives is very beautiful and we went pottering around the town during lunch breaks.

“It’s a really special thing to entrench ourselves in the community.

“We wanted something to truly define the world in which our characters live in and Cornwall has does that with it’s foreboding seas, crashing waves, beautiful skies and clouds.”

The small fishing port of Mevagissy on the south coast of Cornwall is a picture postcard village of narrow streets winding down to its twin harbour.

Named after two Irish saints, St Meva and St Issey, it has become a popular holiday spot just a stone’s throw from the Lost Garden’s of Heligan.

In Playing Nice, the village was used for some of the street and harbour scenes in the first episode when Pete is with his toddler son Theo.

Norton revealed he and the cast were given lessons by an instructor on the North coast bay in readiness for filming.

    He said: I loved it!

“We met a surf instructor called Pete, who’s now become a friend, and he tookus surfing to get us ready for the surf scenes.

“Luckily for me, my character Pete is not a good surfer!

“Instructor Pete runs a surf school called King Surf in Mawgan Porth andhe was a hero.”
