The 2025 Spanish Super Cup final, held on January 12, showcased a dramatic encounter between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, culminating in a resounding 5-2 victory for Barcelona. The match commenced with an electrifying start as Kylian Mbappé scored for Real Madrid just five minutes in, providing the team with an early lead. However, this advantage was short-lived as Barcelona quickly asserted their dominance over the game, exemplified by their impressive possession statistics—82% by the twentieth minute. This shift in momentum marked the beginning of a remarkable performance from the Catalan side.
Barcelona came from an early goal down to beat Real Madrid 5-2 in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday, scoring four goals in a dominant first half and surviving having their goalkeeper sent off to clinch a record-extending 15th trophy.
Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Alejandro Balde were all on target before halftime, after France forward Kylian Mbappé put Real in front in the fifth minute. Raphinha grabbed another in the second half while Rodrygo scored for Real.
Barcelona put in a clinical display to lift their first trophy in more than a year, having had no silverware to show for last season.
Barca prevented Real from winning their third title of the campaign, after they won the European Super Cup against Atalanta and beat Mexico's Pachuca to the Intercontinental Cup last month.
"In the first half we didn't play football, we hit long balls and that wasn't the idea," Real coach Carlo Ancelotti said.
"I told the players that they can lose games, but not in the way we played in the first half."
Barcelona were ruthless in their response, though, and scored four goals in 33 minutes to head into the locker room up 4–1. Lamine Yamal started the comeback with a clinical finish that beat three Real Madrid defenders and Thibaut Courtois. Robert Lewandowski then gave the Catalans the lead from the spot before Raphinha buried a header to take full control of the game. Even Alejandro Balde joined in on the scoring.
Hansi Flick's men did not take their foot off the gas in the second half and Raphinha bagged Barcelona's fifth goal in the 48th minute. Things took a turn for the Catalans when Wojciech Szczęsny was sent off for a poor tackle on Mbappé, who was through on goal. Rodrygo pulled one back for Los Blancos with a lovely free kick, but not even Real Madrid could mount a comeback this significant.
This decisive victory marked FC Barcelona's record-extending fifteenth Super Cup title and demonstrated their capacity to perform under high-pressure situations. The final served as a reminder of both teams’ historical rivalry while simultaneously indicating possible shifts in dominance within Spanish football (3). Ultimately, this match will be remembered not only for its scoreline but also for its embodiment of intense competition and skillful play that characterizes El Clásico encounters.
