Since Patrick Kane and Connor Bedard‘s names have been tied in some recent benchmarks the current Blackhawks’ teenager has been meeting and exceeding — and some other chatter on social media — let’s take a look at how the first two seasons of the two No. 1 picks in the history of the Blackhawks franchise actually compare.
With Kane and Bedard facing off on Friday night, it’s a good time to throw some perspective on the conversation. Here’s how the two stack up in their first two NHL seasons in Chicago (thus far for Bedard):
A lot of people forget that Kane was more of an assist guy to start his career. In fact, he only scored 30 goals in a season once before he won the Hart Trophy in 2015-16, and that came in his third NHL season.
So… Bedard’s gross numbers are on pace with what Kane did in his first two NHL seasons. In fact, they’re eerily comparable in the goals and assists even with Bedard skating more than 90 seconds per game more than Kane did in his first two seasons.
But let’s walk this back a bit…
In his first two seasons (2007-08 and 2008-09), Kane spent 709:40 on the ice at 5-on-5 with Patrick Sharp. Those were Sharp’s age 26 and 27 seasons. He scored 36 and 26 goals, respectively, in seasons in which he skated 80 and 61 games. Sharp also finished fourth in Selke voting in 2007-08 (something many forget quickly).
In his first two seasons (2007-08 and 2008-09), Kane spent 1,253:07 on the ice at 5-on-5 with Jonathan Toews. Those were Toews’ age 19 and 20 seasons. Toews scored 24 and 34 goals, respectively, in seasons in which he skated 64 and 82 games. Toews came in as a rookie with Kane, finishing third behind Kane for the Calder Trophy as a rookie. He received Selke votes for the first time after his sophomore season (he finished 17th).
Since entering the league last year, Bedard has spent 953:16 on the ice at 5-on-5 with Philipp Kurashev. After Kurashev, the most time on ice Bedard has spent with any other forward to date has been 534:49 with Nick Foligno.
Sharp was an all-star and an Olympian for Canada. Toews was one of the best all-around centers of his generation. Respectfully, Kurashev and Foligno are not in that conversation.
Because the Blackhawks have been so bad the first two seasons of Bedard’s career, the talk about his performance has taken a negative tone on social media. That comes with being the best (only) offensive player on terrible teams. But ignoring the context of how Kane performed as a young player has misconstrued the early seasons of his career.
