Day 6 of the Chicago Bears offseason is here and I am debating whether to make soup today and a cheesecake tomorrow or if I am better served doing it the other way around. It’s early enough in my day that I have options. Maybe I’ll figure it out after I get Bullets out the door.
ICYMI: A new contender vying for the services of Ben Johnson has emerged. The Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly enamored with Johnson, who could be lured by minority owner Tom Brady and the opportunity to possibly choose his general manager. This is a situation worth monitoring (to say the least). The timing of this Ben Johnson-Raiders interest report coming on the morning in which the Bears are scheduled to interview the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator is not lost on me. Nope. Not one bit. I have updated my head coach candidate power rankings…MY UPDATED HEAD COACH CANDIDATE POWER RANKINGS ? : Ben Johnson ✅ : Pete Carroll, Kliff Kingsbury, Todd Monken, Mike Vrabel ?: Joe Brady, Aaron Glenn, Mike McCarthy, Drew Petzing ?: Brian Flores ?: Matt Campbell, Vance Joseph, Mike Kafka, David Shaw, Arthur Smith, Anthony Weaver

— Jarrett Payton (@paytonsun) January 11, 2025 What did I just say about believing everything you see? You’ve gotta be better, Caleb. The Raiders-Ben Johnson stuff is why I do my best not to get too attached to any particular candidate. Tunnel vision can often lead you to miss things that you should see. It would sting to lose Mike Vrabel to the Patriots (let’s not kid ourselves — he’s New England’s top target) and Johnson to the Raiders. But this is why you line up waves of candidates so you don’t have to go into scramble mode searching for contingency plans. Ohio State offensive lineman Donovan Jackson opened some eyes at the Cotton Bowl on Friday. Ryan Fowler (via The Draft Network on Twitter/X) shares that Jackson allowed 0 pressures, 0 hurries, 0 quarterback hits, and 0 sacks in his 38 pass protection snaps at left tackle. I’ve seen some draftniks project the Buckeyes lineman to move to guard in the pros and to land in the second round. Perhaps this performance pushes him up to Day 1. FWIW: There is a belief in NFL circles that this draft has a sweet spot in the second round to draft offensive linemen. The Bears have two of the first 10 picks on Day 2. This is where the team should do some heavy lifting in its attempts to bolster the offensive line. Mandatory Credit: Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images You might’ve missed the news that Chicago’s football team has added an offensive lineman to its roster. The team reportedly claimed Jordan McFadden on waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers. On the one hand, the waiver claim doesn’t particularly move me. But it does remind me of how I was hoping they’d do something like that during the season when the offensive line’s depth was taking a hit. Hopefully, this is the first of many additions to the Bears offensive line that will go down between now and the start of training camp.
