Last night was a tough watch. The second period might have been the worst period of hockey the Blackhawks have played this year and only because their goaltender stood on his head for 20 minutes were they still within one heading to the third. We’ve spent this entire season watching the Blackhawks show up and win big games… and then crap the bed in the next one when they have a chance to actually turn the corner that now two head coaches have desperately begged them to make happen. I think at this point it’s painfully clear that Luke Richardson wasn’t the problem.
And the fun part: the Blackhawks flew home from a snowy Detroit last night with the Edmonton Oilers waiting for them in Chicago. Never a dull moment in the NHL, and the schedule rarely gives you a moment to collect yourself when you might need it…

— HockeyStatCards (@hockeystatcards) January 11, 2025 Philipp Kurashev shouldn’t play another game for the Blackhawks. I’m sorry. In my bullets yesterday I shared a story by Ben Pope for the Chicago Sun-Times in which Kurashev expressed his displeasure with being a frequently healthy scratch since the coaching change. He got back into the lineup last night… and was not good. And the clip below, which I shared in my postgame notes, should have him on waivers this weekend. You can’t complain about ice time, get a chance to prove yourself, and then half-ass a game like this and expect better. If someone wants to give the Blackhawks’ future considerations for him at this point, cool. I would take an eighth-round pick.Want to see a comical lack of effort from Philipp Kurashev? pic.twitter.com/ljILdXpUUi
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 11, 2025 Hear me out: Kurashev thru waivers to Rockford and Landon Slaggert comes back up to Chicago. Colton Dach now has assists in two straight games. Frank Nazar is making plays and getting the puck on the net. They’ve both been noticeable in every game they’ve played in the NHL. Maybe adding another forward from Rockford could help to continue shifting the picture forward for the organization. Good stuff from Ben Pope about Nazar (and Dach) stepping into the smoldering dumpster mid-season.With one poor team effort after another in recent weeks, Blackhawks haven't made Frank Nazar's NHL transition easy. But through it all, Nazar remains one player consistently bringing the right attitude.Postgame story from Detroit: t.co/mGiUJKSijc
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 11, 2025 Frank Seravalli posted the podcast episode in which he interviewed University of Denver (and USA Hockey) head coach David Carle yesterday. He rightfully wants to have some job security in his future, and the turnover at the NHL level is an obvious concern. What that tells me is he would need two things to make the jump: money, and guarantees. In theory, the Blackhawks should be able to provide both of those. Good listen here. Highly recommend. twitter.com/frank_seravalli/status/1877739116319662274?s=51&t=ESwYjOKcGL_TWWx-NV4tsw The Oilers practiced in Chicago on Friday afternoon, but Connor McDavid was in Erie for his jersey to be retied by the Otters last night. twitter.com/OHLHockey/status/1877885406043099184Hey how about some Blackhawks prospect highlights?
Ryan Greene had a big hand in Boston University getting off to a hot start last night. He scored the game’s first goal and had an assist on the second and third goals for the Terriers. Greene was also credited with six of BU’s 12 shot attempts in the opening 20. He added a third assist and fourth point early in the second period.Friday night ? from #Blackhawks prospect Ryan Greene for @TerrierHockey pic.twitter.com/aWx216Ip9S

The Wolves lost 5-4. Jack Pridham and Kitchener were taking on potential No. 1 overall pick Porter Martone and Brampton. Pridham had an assist on Kitchener’s second goal of the night… after Brampton scored four straight to open the game (two of which came off Martone assists). Kitchener lost 5-2. Martin Misiak had an assist for Erie last night as well.MORE FROM BLEACHER NATION: Check Out BN Fantasy | Subscribe to The BN Newsletter
