For 15 years, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews were attached to each in Chicago. They were the embodiment of Blackhawks history: the first No. 1 overall pick in the history of the franchise and the longest-tenured captain in the history of the organ-I-zation.
Two players who joined the league as teenagers and went on to resurrect the Blackhawks and win three championships together, they were always the odd couple, with Kane’s exciting style and Toews being “Captain Serious.” They shared an agent, Pat Brisson, and signed matching contracts throughout their careers in Chicago.
But as Toews’ health declined, the Blackhawks slid further out of the playoff picture and the rebuild began in earnest, Kane was traded out of Chicago. Now two years removed from that deal, Kane is in Detroit. And Toews, who has been out of the league since his contract expired with the Blackhawks at the end of the 2022-23 season because of his health, has started to talk about a comeback.
With the Blackhawks in Detroit on Friday, this is the first time Chicago reporters have had a chance to ask Kane about his longtime captain potentially returning to the NHL.
Here’s the quote from Ben Pope in Detroit on Friday morning:
“I’d love to see him come back and play for the Blackhawks. That would be amazing. When you look at his career and how storied it is and how much success he had as a Blackhawk, you don’t want to see him wear another jersey… I don’t know know if that’s really in the cards. That’s just my thinking.”
I wholeheartedly agree that Toews should never wear another jersey. But the powers that be at 1901 W. Madison would need to change course for 19 to return to the ice in the Indian head.
