AS Kohl’s reevaluates its operations, the chain has officially confirmed its plans to shutter 27 underperforming locations across the US.
The wave of closures will span 15 states, with the completion date for the shutters in the near future.
Kohl’s announced on Thursday its intention to cut underperforming locations across the US.
Twenty-seven stores will be impacted, accounting for less than 3% of the company’s 1,150 locations.
“While Kohl’s continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base, these specific locations were underperforming stores,” the department store chain shared in a statement, noting the closures would take place by April 2025.
Kohl’s added that all impacted employees had been informed and offered a severance package or the opportunity to apply to other open roles at the company.
“Kohl’s thanks our associates for their work and is working to support our associates during this transition,” said the retailer.

“As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”
Kohl’s also shared that the company will close one of its E-commerce Fulfillment Centers, or EFCs, when the lease expires in May this year.
Located in San Bernardino, California, the facility has been in operation for Kohl’s since 2010 and is one of 15 EFCs and distribution centers in the company’s lineup.
Kohl’s announced that it no longer needed the facility due to new technology and improved in-store efficiency.
“In recent years, Kohl’s has increased efficiencies with new technology capabilities at newer EFC facilities and has expanded the company’s ability to fulfill customer orders from store locations, allowing the company to maintain its ability to fulfill orders without the San Bernardino facility,” reads the statement.
RETAIL REGRET
The news of Kohl’s closures comes as the chain struggles to keep its sales up in a tough retail climate.
The Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based retailer had a tough year in 2024.
“Sales have been a challenge for us in 2024 and weakened further in Q3,” said the department store chain’s CEO during an earnings call.
He attributed the overall drop in sales to underperformance in the apparel and footwear businesses.
Kingsbury shared that the two sectors had been put on the back burner last year as the company focused heavily on “key growth areas” such as Sephora, home decor, gifting, and its partnership with Babies R Us.
However, the promising initiatives were “unable to offset the declines in our core business,” according to the CEO.
“We are not satisfied with our performance in 2024 and are taking aggressive action to reverse the sales declines,” he added.
Kohl’s is hoping to revive its business as rival stores such as Sears and JCPenney filed for bankruptcy in past years, struggling with debt.
Big Lots is another major retailer taking a hit, with plans to close another location following its bankruptcy filing last September.
Party City also filed for bankruptcy after 40 years of business and has confirmed its final closing date nears as 695 stores are officially “winding down.”
