Weld County Commissioner Perry Buck will serve as the new chairwoman for the Weld County Board of Commissioners after a unanimous vote Monday.
Commissioner Scott James was elected to serve as the chair pro-tem, also unanimously.
“I take great pride in the fact that it was unanimous,” Buck said. “I just love Weld County and hope to make Weld County proud of me.”
The Weld County Home Rule Charter requires the board to select the chair and chair pro-tem among the current commissioners at the start of their first meeting each year. Though he was eligible for the position again, former County Chairman Kevin Ross seconded Buck’s appointment to the position, citing tradition as the reason he did not seek the position again this year.
“It was a pleasure to serve the folks of Weld County for the last year as the chairman,” Ross. “Commissioner Buck has our full support as our chairperson this year, and I’m excited about it. We have a lot of big things coming this year.”
Buck and the other commissioners will consider building a new justice center as one of their big projects for the year. According to Buck, the county will need to hire an additional three judges in the near future, and there isn’t space in the current justice center for that growth.
“We’re still in the preliminary stages of that, and it may not happen until 2026,” Buck said. “We just know that we definitely need to get things in order to expand.”
The board on Monday also assigned the commissioner’s new coordinator roles for 2025:
