Jimmy Carter’s State Funeral: Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwoods Emotional Rendition of Imagine Divides Viewers

On Thursday, Jan. 9, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood performed an emotional rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine" in tribute to former President Jimmy Carter at his state funeral.

The couple, who once credited the late president and his wife as "walking examples for us as a married couple, for us as human beings, and for us down here on this planet," sang in his honor during Carter's state funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral after he spent several days lying in state in the Capitol rotunda.

In a clip from Fox's broadcast of the ceremony uploaded to X, Brooks strummed on an acoustic guitar while the two sang an acoustic rendition of the song, with members of the audience clearly mouthing the words alongside them for an emotional moment of unity that reached audiences at home, too.

"I'm crying it was amazing. 'Imagine all the people living life in peace,'" one person replied to the video clip.

"So simple, and lovely," another wrote.

"I was holding it together fairly well but when Garth and Trisha sang Imagine I was done," another viewer admitted. "What a beautiful tribute to a beautiful human being."

Some, however, attacked the song choice, which they felt went against his Christian faith.

"Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood sing Imagine at a highly Christian funeral?!! How awful. Imagine there's no Heaven??" one questioned.

"That song was terrible I have a feeling that wasn’t jimmy’s decision," another assumed. However, in a 2007 interview, when the former president was asked to pick his favorite Beatles track, he opted for the same tune from Lennon's solo career.

Other musical selections included a performance of "The Road Home" by the Cathedral Choir and "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," sung by the U.S. Marine Orchestra and Armed Forces Chorus, among others.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden delivered a eulogy for his predecessor. The sons of former President Gerald Ford and former Vice President Walter Mondale also offered tributes on their behalf.

President Carter died on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100. His body will be transferred to Georgia for a private family funeral before he is buried on the grounds of his home in Plains.
