Kliff Kingsbury Joins the Bears’ List of Interview Targets

I woke up on Wednesday wondering why the Bears had not reached out to Kliff Kingsbury. After all, Kingsbury was an obvious interview candidate, had long been believed to be someone on Chicago’s radar, and was reported last week to be an expected interview candidate. Fast forward about 24 hours later and it is being reported that Chicago’s football team has reached out and requested an interview with the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport has the scoop:

#Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury has received requests from the #Bears and #Saints, sources say and Chicago would signal a reunion with Caleb Williams.Kingsbury was asked if he wanted to be an HC again: “At some point. We'll see how everything plays out, but I'm very happy here." pic.twitter.com/mPWixUnLso

If you’ll recall, the Bears interviewed Kliff Kingsbury for their offensive coordinator opening last offseason before hiring Shane Waldron. Not only did that decision backfire for the Bears to the point where Waldron and the head coach who hired him, Kingsbury would go on to land in Washington and lead the Commanders’ offense to a charmed season.

Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is the Offensive Rookie of the Year front-runner after throwing for 3,568 yards, tossing 25 touchdowns (against just 9 interceptions), and posting a 100.1 passer rating. Daniels also added 891 rushing yards and six ground scores for good measure. Overall, Washington’s offense finished with the fifth-most points and seventh-most yards. In other words, this is what Bears fans would have wanted from their offensive coordinator last season. But instead of getting that, this fanbase finds itself obsessing over head coach candidate possibilities. Go figure.

Kliff Kingsbury wants a second chance at coaching

Kliff Kingsbury wasn’t a top target for me when this search began. Frankly, I’ve long felt that the connection between Kingsbury and Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was overblown. Kliff and Caleb were at USC together in 2023, which wasn’t the quarterback’s best year on campus. And I still don’t know how hands-on Kingsbury was with WIlliams when his title with the Trojans was Senior Offensive Analyst. This isn’t to say their time together was bad because it wasn’t. It just seems overstated.

With that being said, I have a newfound interest in Kliff Kingsbury as a Bears head coaching option because of what he recently said during an exchange with a reporter when discussing a possible future where he returns to the head coach ranks.

    Check it out:

Reporter: Do you want to be a head coach again?

Kliff Kingsbury: Yeah. I’m sure at some point. Yeah, at some point.

Reporter: Do you plan to interview for jobs this year?

Kliff Kingsbury: Umm, I won’t comment on that. But, yeah, we’ll see how everything plays out but I am very happy here. This has been an awesome, awesome place and has helped me kind of rekindle my love for the sport.

Reporter: Last one. What did you learn from your first stint?

Kliff Kingsbury: I don’t think I set the foundation the way I would do it after watching DQ and how he set the foundation from Day 1. And it was these are the standards, and this what we won’t compromise, and this is what we’re going to be. I definitely could have done a better job of that. And once you don’t lay it out like that it’s hard to put it back in, it’s hard to reset it. I think that where he’s done such a great job of saying this is what we’re going to be from Day 1 and there are no ifs, ands, or buts, and the guys brought in.

In the end, the Bears are wise to interview Kliff Kingsbury for this opening. But unless Chicago’s QB1 pounds the table for one of his former coaches, I am not sure if this will be the job for Kingsbury. However, I am far more interested in that possibility now than I was a month ago because it sounds like Kliff has learned some things and grown from the experience of learning under Dan Quinn. As a believer in second-chance candidates, I hope Chicago gives Kliff some serious attention.
