Aspen View Mental Health celebrates bringing mental health-focused intensive outpatient program to Greeley

A new Greeley clinic aims to bridge the gap between the high need for mental health treatment and the lack of intensive outpatient programs.

The Aspen View Mental Health team invited the community to an open house and ribbon-cutting on Tuesday at 8217 W 20th St. in Greeley. The clinic opened its doors in late November to offer an intensive outpatient program for adults in need of treatment for mental health conditions including depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and more.

The Aspen View team saw a need for mental health treatment options in the Greeley area, according to Nathan Swisher, the program’s clinical director. Swisher said the clinic helps fulfill a high demand for intensive outpatient programs for mental health, while most surrounding programs focus on substance abuse.

Although mental health remains the top priority, the team offers services to help with dual diagnoses, like mental health and substance abuse, according to Jessica Varner, an Aspen View therapist.

Swisher, a Greeley native who previously had a private practice in the city, said the new community-focused program targets people who fall in the middle of mental health care: less extreme than inpatient, hospitalized treatment but a higher level than the weekly traditional outpatient therapy.

“This would be for people who just require some more support than once-a-week therapy but they’re not at that hospitalization level,” he said. “They’re not in a crisis or an emergency situation. That’s actually one of the benefits of this type of care, is that it can prevent getting to that point.”

The intensive outpatient program can also reduce wait times for those who need treatment right after coming out of the crisis setting of the hospital, Varner added.

At Aspen View, clients attend in-person group therapy four days per week for three hours, as well as additional individual, family or couples therapy.

Patients entering the program first receive a psychological assessment so the team can craft a treatment plan. In addition to therapy sessions, clients also have case management services to employ a “comprehensive yet flexible” option.

The mental health therapists prioritize delivering evidence-based treatment in a comfortable and new space, which includes a room with a pool table and snacks for clients.

Varner, who has been practicing in Greeley for 12 years, said the length of stay depends on each person and how they progress through the program. On average, people remain in the treatment for about 10 to 12 weeks. The team then offers follow-up care and makes recommendations or referrals for traditional therapy.

The clinic accepts all private insurance. For more information, call 970-714-2273 or go to bit.ly/406RSlw.

“We have a lot of first-hand knowledge about what needs or demands for care there are in this area,” Swisher said. “Over the past year or two, we recognized that treatment gap and that’s how this all started.”
