Nintendo Switch 2 Leak Unveils Mockup and Release Month

The anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2 has garnered significant attention within the gaming community, particularly following a recent leak from accessory maker Genki. This leak suggests an April 2025 release date and includes a detailed mockup of the console, showcasing innovative features such as magnetically attached Joy-Cons with strategically placed buttons and an enhanced kickstand. Such developments indicate Nintendo's intention to improve user experience by addressing common criticisms associated with the original Switch model.

That’s what happened this week at CES, where accessory manufacturer Genki is showing off its upcoming Switch 2 accessories — and an alleged mockup of the Switch 2 itself. French outlet Numerama posted a video of their tour through the booth on X (formerly Twitter):

IGN visited Genki's booth at CES today and spoke with a Genki representative while examining their Switch mock-up. The representative expressed surprise at all the fervor over their mock-up, saying they felt that all the information about the Switch 2 had already leaked and Genki wasn't saying anything new. "I didn't expect this much media attention, to be honest," they said. While Genki's mock-up does appear to add significant weight to a growing pool of past leaks on what the Switch 2 will be, it's worth noting that Nintendo still has not officially revealed anything about the system, and all these claims are subject to change or total debunking. A formal announcement is expected in the first quarter of this year, per Nintendo.

While the Genki representative did not know the technical specs of the Switch 2 or anything about the motherboard, they did say they could attest to "physically what's there, what's pressable and what's not."

They again confirmed the Joy-Cons attaching to the system via magnets on the system side and metallic SL/SR buttons on the Joy-Cons that can be released via a button on the back of each Joy-Con.

In addition to Genki's revelations, various mockups created by Reddit users have surfaced online, reflecting a design consistent with these leaks . These concepts feature elements such as a minimalist kickstand and updated Joy-Con designs that include additional functionality. The prospect of integrating an optical sensor could potentially enhance gameplay mechanics by introducing mouse-like capabilities for certain games. Given these advancements, it is apparent that Nintendo aims to innovate while maintaining some familiar aesthetics from its predecessor.

The accumulation of leaks surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2 hints at an impending official announcement from Nintendo itself. Reports suggest that this announcement could occur as early as January 2025. As speculation builds regarding both the design and functionalities of the new console, it becomes increasingly clear that anticipation for its release is palpable among consumers. The convergence of information from various sources not only fuels excitement but also exemplifies how leaks can shape public perception before official confirmations are made.
