Banner Health encourages pregnant women to reduce their newborn’s risk of developing a severe illness through vaccination.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season typically peaks in the winter and ends in the spring, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Banner Health reported RSV usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms but can lead to serious breathing problems, especially for infants.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Abrysvo, the first RSV vaccine, in August 2023, according to a Banner Health news release. Abrysvo works to prevent lower respiratory tract disease that’s caused by RSV in infants from birth through 6 months old.
RSV hospitalizations for newborns are 16 times more likely than the flu, according to Colleen Foos of obstetrics and gynecology at Banner Health in Greeley.
“Abrysvo lowered the risk of severe lower respiratory illness in newborns 84.7% in the first 90 days of life, and 69.4% in the first 180 days of life,” Foos said.
Those delivering during RSV season should get vaccinated between 32 weeks to 36 weeks and six days, according to Foos. The vaccine then produces antibodies against RSV that cross the placenta.
The CDC also recommends that adults 75 and older and those aged 60-74 with an increased risk of severe infection receive a single dose of an RSV vaccine.
Women have another option to ensure their newborns receive antibodies if they don’t want the vaccine, the release said. Doctors can administer Beyfortus, a monoclonal antibody effective in fighting against RSV, as a single intramuscular injection.
“Whether the mother elects to receive the vaccine or the child receives it after birth, both are proven to be effective,” Foos said. “One is not better than the other.”
