Make it two! After one report name-dropped Nikola Vucevic as a trade target for the Golden State Warriors this week, we have another.
Marc J. Spears of Andscape joined ESPN on Tuesday to discuss the Warriors as a possible landing spot for Jimmy Butler. Similar to The Athletic, he said it’s unlikely the Miami Heat superstar ends up in The Bay and far more likely the organization targets a new starting center.
“I’m hearing the Warriors literally want to go bigger than Jimmy Butler. And what I mean by that is they are one of the most undersized teams in the league, so they’re trying to get a big guy to go alongside Draymond Green,” Spears told Malika Andrews on NBA Today. So people on their list include Nikola Vucevic, who’s probably been maybe the top guy on that list. He can shoot 3s, he can play the inside, he makes $20.0 million as opposed to the $48.0 Jimmy Makes. Keep an eye on guys like Walker Kessler and John Collins of the Jazz. Also, Jonas Valanciunas of the Wizards.”
This rumor sure feels like it’s growing some legs, but will it start to run?

All things considered, this interest from the Warriors still feels exploratory. We haven’t heard any reports that suggest preliminary talks have started between the two teams. Does that mean there has not been a single phone conversation? No, but it does suggest that Golden State’s interest remains fluid.
At the same time, Spears notes that Vucevic is likely at the top of the Warriors’ list. And that’s practically the same strong wording we heard earlier this week from The Athletic! Obviously, the more frequently this situation arises, the more probable it is that something significant develops between these two teams.
If one thing is for sure, Vucevic is proving to be one of the best big men on this year’s market. He is averaging 20.5 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game on career-high shooting efficiency. While his $21.0 million owed next season could be a deterrent for some, it may not be the hardest thing for certain teams to talk themselves into as the trade deadline approaches. The Warriors certainly feel like they could be one of those teams, as they sit 18-18 on the season and 10th in the Western Conference. With Stephen Curry still playing out of his mind, they have no choice but to push for a playoff run.
We discussed Nikola Vucevic’s potential fit with the Warriors A LOT more in our initial post on this rumor, so I’ll direct your attention there. I’m not holding my breath, but I think this could make a ton of sense for both sides.
