New Mendocino County supervisors sworn in Tuesday

Two new members of the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors were sworn in this week at the beginning of the board’s Jan. 7 meeting.

Madeline Cline was sworn in as 1st District supervisor, having been elected after the previous supervisor, Glenn McGourty, declined to run again; and Bernie Norvell was sworn in as 4th District supervisor, having been elected following the stepping down of the previous supervisor, Dan Gjerde.

Also sworn in this week was current 2nd District Supervisor Maureen Mulheren, who officially began her second term on the board. Mulheren also ended her year as chair of the board Tuesday, finishing her stint by nominating 3rd District Supervisor John Haschak as chair of the board, and Norvell as vice-chair.

After the board unanimously elected Haschak as chair, he took the gavel and thanked them for the “honor and privilege,” commending Mulheren for her “strength and clarity throughout the last year” as chair, describing her as “doing an excellent job keeping issues in front of us, focusing on the positive achievements of the county, and working through thorny issues. I appreciate how she celebrated staff and appreciated what staff does each and every day. So thank you for your work,” he added while addressing Mulheren.

“Something new we’re trying to do this year,” Haschak continued, “is before the meetings we’re (showing on the screen) some of the information about the board meetings, the procedures, how to contact the clerk and individual board members. The screen is supposed to be rolling that information before the meeting and during the breaks, so we keep the communication with the public clearer, and make sure everyone knows what’s going on. So, hopefully that provides something for the public to learn from and be informed with.”

As public expression then began, resident Carole Hester led the room in a rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” then told the board she was very “excited about this group of supervisors, and I expect great and wonderful things from you.”

Hester then imparted wisdom to the board she said was from one of her high school teachers: “‘Everybody has a hobby horse to ride,’ (meaning that) all of us have special agendas… and y’all have such a challenging job to sort through and find out what is important… so thank you for your service, those who have served and those who are just beginning their service.”

Haschak thanked Hester, describing her as a “dedicated public servant” who served many years as foreperson of the Mendocino Grand Jury.
