Five San Diego high school students were named scholars in the 2025 Regeneron Science Talent Search on Wednesday, showcasing their ability to be STEM leaders.
The Society for Science announced the 300 scholars based on scholars’ submissions of independent research projects showcasing their research and leadership skills through community involvement and creativity in scientific thinking.
The scholars will be awarded $2,000 each, and their schools will receive $2,000 for each enrolled scholar.
The five scholars from San Diego are Nandana Madhukara from Canyon Crest Academy, Sarah Gao from Canyon Crest Academy, Jason Zhang from Del Norte High School, Logan Brown from High Tech High-North County, and Trevor Chen from Westview High School.
The scholars were chosen from 2,500 entrants from 795 high schools in 48 states, including American Samoa, Guam, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and 14 other countries. The 300 scholars are from 200 American and international high schools in 33 states, as well as Washington D.C., China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Switzerland.
The research projects were divided into 20 categories, from medicine and health to computer science and social science.
On Jan. 23, 40 high school scholars will be named Regeneron Science Talent Search finalists. They will compete for more than $1.8 million in awards during a week-long Washington, D.C. competition from March 6 to 12.
“Congratulations to the 300 scholars in this year’s Regeneron Science Talent Search,” said Maya Ajmera, president and chief executive of the Society for Science and executive publisher of Science News.
