The Metropolitan Police has passed a full file of evidence in relation to a Premier League footballer accused of multiple rapes to the Crown Prosecution Service.
The alleged offences occurred between 2021 and 2023.
The player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, remains under contract and in receipt of hundreds of thousands of pounds a week in wages.
He has continued to play on full salary for his club, The Telegraph reported.
In July 2022 the man, who is in his 30s, was arrested in relation to the Met Police’s ongoing investigation.
The arrest came after a report made by a woman in her 20s, The Telegraph reported.
It said the player has also been accused of two other rapes against another woman, also in her 20s, in April and June 2021.
A third potential victim of a sexual offence allegedly carried out by the player was also made known to police, it added.
The footballer was interviewed under caution in February 2023 and November 2024.
The Met has confirmed it is investigating multiple reports of alleged sexual offences by a man in his 30s and is supporting those who have come forward to police.
A Met spokesperson said: “Met officers are investigating following a number of reports of alleged sexual offences between 2021 and 2023.
“A full file has been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and detectives continue to work with prosecutors.
“Those who have come forward to police continue to receive support from Met officers.”
The CPS is reviewing the file of evidence the police have collected and will decide whether or not to prosecute the suspect.
The player’s club has not commented on his arrest or the police investigation into the alleged offences.
Football clubs tend to take different approaches to handling players accused of rape.
Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy, was suspended without pay from August 2021 until he left the club in June 2023, after he was charged with rape and sexual assault in August 2021.
Mendy, who was later cleared of the charges, won an employment tribunal claim that he was entitled to “the majority of his unpaid salary” from the Premier League club.
Manchester United suspended Mason Greenwood on full pay after he was arrested in January 2022. He was later charged with rape and assault but the charges against him were dropped in February 2023.
