MILLIONS of Americans are set to receive higher Social Security payments throughout 2025.
The boosted payments, reaching as much as $5,108, start today as the first round of January checks is sent out.
Social Security, a financial safety net for millions of Americans, was created in 1935 when President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law.
The social insurance program provides economic support to Americans with disabilities, families in which a spouse or parent has died, and retirees.
Starting in 1975, the Social Security Administration began automatic annual Cost-of-Living Adjustments.
Also known as COLA, the provision provides general benefit increases based on the cost of living, which the Consumer Price Index measures.
The administration announced a 2.5% COLA for 2025 on October 10, and the increased Social Security checks will be paid out starting today.
Due to the COLA, monthly Social Security retirement benefits increased on average by $50 to $1,976 beginning this month, up from $1,927 last year.
Americans who retire at age 70 this year can receive a maximum monthly benefit of $5,108, which is up from $4,873 last year.
Those who choose to retire at their full retirement age, or FRA, in 2025 receive even less, with a maximum benefit of $4,018.
This number is up from last year’s monthly check, $3,822, thanks to the COLA.
The FRA is based on the year you were born:
1943–1954: age 66 1955–1959: age 66 and a certain number of months, increasing by two months each year: 1955: 66 and 2 months 1956: 66 and 4 months 1957: 66 and 6 months 1958: 66 and 8 months 1959: 66 and 10 months 1960 or later: age 67The last payment tier encompasses Americans who retire at age 62 this year, with a maximum monthly Social Security benefit of $2,831 – up from $2,710 in 2024.

The boosted Social Security payment amounts will go into effect today as the first round of January checks is sent out.
