The journalist was a native of Washington, D.C. After launching his television news career in Buffalo, N.Y.—following a stint in radio—he returned to his hometown in 2006, joining NBC News4.
He detailed his memories of the 1968 riots for the station's 40th anniversary coverage. Additionally, he participated in major coverage like the Iran-Contra hearings, the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon, and the Washington-area sniper shootings, according to his colleagues at News4.
"Ward had a way with words and music. He shined when he had a pen, a microphone — or a guitar – in his hands," they wrote.
A statement from his family added, "As a distinguished journalist, Derrick’s storytelling, prolific writing, warmth, and humor touched countless lives. Our children and our entire family will miss him dearly."
Ward is survived by his three children, Derrick, Jr., Ian and Marisa, among other family members. Details surrounding his memorial service have not yet been finalized or revealed.
Viewers of Ward's work were devastated by the announcement, with one replying on Threads, "This is so sad - Derrick was a first class reporter and a mainstay in the DMV. He will be missed."
"Oh no!" another wrote. "I have always valued his reports. Dignified and professional. Such a great loss."
