January 7, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Dozens of Sudanese journalists have urged their elected union to withdraw from a civilian political coalition and steer clear of political entanglements, according to a memorandum seen by Sudan Tribune. The petition, signed by 100 members of the Sudanese Journalists Syndicate, was submitted to the syndicate’s president, executive committee, and council. It comes ahead of an executive committee meeting where the matter is expected to be debated. The journalists called on the syndicate to refrain, in its official capacity, from joining any political coalitions, explicitly citing its current involvement with the Taqaddum coalition (Coordination of Democratic Civilian Forces). They emphasized the importance of the syndicate avoiding any future political alliances to safeguard its neutrality, independence, and its core mission. The signatories, however, affirmed their commitment to freedom, freedom of the press and expression, and the rights of journalists and human rights.
