Justis Huni demolished Shaun Potgeiter to set up a potential clash with Moses Itauma.
Huni came into the contest with a huge reputation as a glittering prospect in the blue-riband division, winning all 11 of his professional fights to date.
The Australian came into the contest ranked in fifth by the WBO and pushing towards a world title contest.
Victory was needed to at least set up a potential clash with power-hitting British prospect Itauma, a mouth watering match-up between two young talents.
And he did exactly that making a huge statement down under in front of his own fans.
He demolished his rival with a stunning display to score a routine second round stoppage.
Huni has now cemented his status in the rankings, and could well face the biggest test of his career against Itauma before the end of the year.
Itauma recently scored a stunning KO of Huni’s fellow countryman Demzey McKean on the undercard of Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk.
And WBO president Gustavo Olivieri confirmed to talkSPORT that the pair could now be sanctioned to fight for the WBO interim title.
Huni is currently ranked at No.5 with the Briton just behind him at No.6.
The pair are currently the only available contenders, given No.3 ranked Fury is unlikely to pursue that avenue for a shot at the WBO belt after losing for a second time to champion Usyk.
“So the first fighters on the rankings are committed to future fights so that makes them unavailable,” Olivieri told talkSPORT.
Itauma could now be next for HuniGetty“Moses Itauma certainly if we are going down the ratings and those scenarios arise, he will be next to fight.
“I’m not going to say that’s definitely going to happen, but it could happen as Moses will be in line to fight for an interim belt.”
Eddie Hearn later confirmed there were ‘discussions’ surrounding the potential fight, providing Huni progressed through his latest which he has now done so.
Joseph Parker currently holds the WBO interim title, but will get his shot at the full title against current champion Daniel Dubois on February 22.
Itauma is expected to rise to the very top, similarly to Huni, and there is no boundaries to his potential future achievements.
