More than 24 hours later, the Cowboys have reportedly responded to the Bears’ request by declining permission for Chicago to chop it up with Dallas’ head coach. Based on the reaction from Bears fans after news of the interview request dropped just days after it was reported that the job opening in Chicago could interest the former Green Bay Packers coach, I imagine there was a large sigh of relief from this fan base.

The question on the mind of many: “Did Jerry Jones just save the Bears from themselves?”
Perhaps he did. The Cowboys have Mike McCarthy under contract until Jan. 14. So the Bears, or any team that wanted to interview him for a head coaching vacancy, had to submit a formal request to the team. Dallas, which is under no obligation to green-light an employee’s opportunity to interview for a lateral position, denying Chicago a chance to interview McCarthy feels telling. This feels like a sign that the Cowboys will come to an agreement on a new deal with their head coach. Nothing may be imminent. But why else would Dallas deny Chicago an opportunity to discuss its job opening with McCarthy if it didn’t have an inkling about keeping him around?
With that being said, the Bears could still interview Mike McCarthy if he and the Cowboys don’t agree to terms on a new deal. If McCarthy and Dallas don’t have a contract in place by Jan. 14, the Bears (or any other interested team) could interview the Super Bowl-winning coach once the window of exclusivity expires. In other words, we are not out of the woods just yet. However, I am starting to see the end of the road when it comes to rumors connecting Mike McCarthy and the Chicago Bears head coaching gig.
