Homes threatened as brush fire breaks out in Pacific Palisades amid strong windstorm

A brush fire broke out near Pacific Palisades and swelled to about 20 acres amid a strong windstorm Tuesday morning, Jan. 7, authorities said, and structures were threatened.

The fire was burning near the 1100 block of North Piedra Morada Drive, a residential street in a hillside neighborhood, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Dark gray smoke could be seen from the Santa Monica pier.

What started the fire was not known. The fire started amid windy conditions during a period in which Southern California was under a red flag warning for extreme fire danger.
