New York’s governor Kathy Hochul has announced the availability of $101.8m in state funding through the Passenger and Freight Rail Assistance Program.
This initiative is aimed at enhancing New York’s rail and port infrastructure, reinforcing the state’s trade corridors.
The programme also focuses on improving safety and environmental sustainability by increasing rail usage for the movement of people and goods.
Hochul said: “New York State is committed to investing in our rail network to ensure that the raw materials and products that fuel so much of our economy continue to get where they need to go safely and as efficiently as possible.
“This funding will help us further modernise our rail infrastructure, allowing our local businesses to get the products they need when they need them.”
Applications for funding are being accepted until 7 April 2025.

The New York State Department of Transportation administers the programme, which will select projects through a competitive process.
Criteria for selection include benefit-cost analysis, alignment with regional economic development plans, safety improvements, compatibility with other investments, and actions that promote resilience and reduce climate risk.
Among the previously awarded projects under this programme have included the purchase of low-emission locomotives, track and bridge upgrades, and congestion mitigation efforts.
Among the eligible activities for the current funding opportunity encompass a wide range of infrastructure enhancements.
These include yard and terminal construction, clearance obstruction elimination, and dock construction, among others.
Projects that focus on economic competitiveness and greenhouse gas emission reductions are being prioritised.
New York senator Jeremy Cooney said: “This investment from Governor Hochul represents our state’s strong commitment to modernising and enhancing rail and port infrastructure here in New York.
“The projects chosen through this programme will make an immediate impact on our systems’ safety, reliability, and efficiency and I’m ready for my continued work with the governor to create the kind of infrastructure system that New Yorkers deserve.”
Recently, the New York State Department of Transportation received a $32m grant to promote the use of low-carbon materials in construction projects.
