Matt Shaw Getting Some Early NL Rookie of the Year Attention

These kinds of predictions are pretty tough in June, much less in January, so I wouldn’t take too much away from it.

But you can at least take away the idea that a lot of executives see Matt Shaw as not only on the cusp of his big league debut, but potentially being an impact player right away in the big leagues:

Just six prospects received votes at all in the poll for likely NL Rookie of the Year, with Nationals outfielder Dylan Crews getting half of the votes. Fair enough, being that he was the top position player selected in the loaded 2023 MLB Draft, and he’s already made his brief big league debut.

But behind Crews, in second place in the poll, was Matt Shaw at 18.8%. Actually winning the award would likely require Shaw to lock down a starting job pretty early in the year with the big league team, but that’s something that will be a very real opportunity for him.

We’re going to continue to see the Cubs attached to infield rumors the rest of the offseason (like earlier with Yoan Moncada), and we may even see the Cubs add someone to compete for starts at third base. But what I don’t think we’re going to see is the Cubs add a sure-fire, every-day, block-Shaw-caliber third baseman in free agency or trade. I’m not saying the Cubs trading Isaac Paredes (and Cam Smith) in the Kyle Tucker trade was specifically about ensuring third base stays open for years for Matt Shaw, but that has become its practical reality. Shaw could be a special player, and if you give him the time to continue adjusting at third base, may well be special as soon as this year.

Bonus: if Shaw is on the Opening Day roster and then goes on to win the Rookie of the Year (or finishes in the top-three of MVP voting before he reaches arbitration), the Cubs will add a draft pick via the Prospect Promotion Incentive program. There’s your extreme dream outcome.
