Reports of there being beef between the Fast and the Furious stars started back in August 2016. In a now-deleted Instagram post, Johnson lauded all of his female costars on the set of Fate of the Furious, the eighth installment in the hit franchise. He then segued that into calling out his male costars by comparison, shading one anonymous actor in particular.
"My female costars are always amazing and I love'em," he wrote. "My male costars, however, are a different story. Some conduct themselves as stand up men and true professionals, while others don't. The ones that don't are too chicken s--- to do anything about it anyway. Candy a----. When you watch this movie next April and it seems like I'm not acting in some of these scenes and my blood is legit boiling — you're right."
Fans were able to sleuth out that Diesel was one of the main people that Johnson was calling out. As an insider told People, "Vin has been having problems with The Rock because The Rock keeps showing up late for production. Sometimes he doesn't show up at all, and he's delaying the production."

When did Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson leave the Fast and the Furious franchise?
Five years after seemingly calling out Diesel, Johnson announced he would be leaving the hit movie franchise for good after appearing in four films. Only a month earlier, Diesel had given an interview with Men's Health where he talked about his alleged rift with Johnson, saying, "My approach at the time was a lot of tough love to assist in getting that performance where it needed to be."
When Johnson was asked about Diesel's "tough love" comment a few months later, he was apoplectic. "One part of me feels like there's no way I would dignify any of that bull---- with an answer," he told Vanity Fair. I've been around the block a lot of times. Unlike [Diesel], I did not come from the world of theater," he added. "And, you know, I came up differently and was raised differently."
Johnson continued: "And I came from a completely different culture and environment. And I go into every project giving it my all. And if I feel that there's some things that need to be squared away and handled and taken care of, then I do it. And it's just that simple. So when I read that, just like everybody else, I laughed. I laughed hard. We all laughed. And somewhere I'm sure Fellini is laughing too."
While Johnson hadn't starred in a mainline Fast and Furious film after that (though he did headline the spinoff Hobbs and Shaw), it hasn't been without trying. In November 2021, only a few weeks after Johnson's scathing interview, Diesel penned an Instagram post, imploring him to join the upcoming tenth film.
"My little brother Dwayne... the time has come," he wrote. “The world awaits the finale of Fast 10. As you know, my children refer to you as Uncle Dwayne in my house. There is not a holiday that goes by that they and you don’t send well wishes... but the time has come."

Despite the public plea, Johnson was not having it, calling it "manipulation" in an interview with CNN. "I didn’t like that he brought up his children in the post, as well as Paul Walker's death. Leave them out of it," he said. "We had spoken months ago about this and came to a clear understanding. My goal all along was to end my amazing journey with this incredible Fast & Furious franchise with gratitude and grace.”

How did the feud between Vin Diesel and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson end?
It only makes sense for two big-budget action stars like Diesel and Johnson to publicly declare the end of their feud in a post-credits scene. In Fast X, the most recent film in the franchise, recent baddie Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa) gives a call to Johnson's Hobbs, telling him he's his next revenge target. "Well, I ain’t hard to find,” Hobbs replied.
A month later, in June 2023, Johnson made an Instagram post, where he announced he was officially returning to the franchise, saying, "Yes, it is true. Hobbs is back."
"Despite us having our differences, me and Vin," he went on to say, "we’ve been like brothers for years, and despite our differences, when you lead with — number one, resolve — but also you think about the future and plans that are much bigger than ourselves. Those bigger plans are the buildouts,” Johnson added. “They are the North Star.”

In a small, but significant moment for Fast and Furious fans, Diesel took to the floor at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards to present the award for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement – Motion Picture. Before launching into his speech, he took a look off-camera at Johnson, saying a quick, "Hey, Dwayne." The camera cut to Johnson with a small smile, responding in kind. Will Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson be in Fast X: Part 2?
Yes! As confirmed by Johnson, he will have a starring role once again in the upcoming Fast X: Part 2. Not only that, but apparently a spinoff series around his character Shaw is in the works as well. Looks like Johnson is here to stay!
