As the Triangle endured winter weather through Sunday evening, the Orange County Schools district called for a two-hour delay to classes for Monday, Jan. 6 — which marks the return to classes for educators and students following the winter break.
An alert sent by district leadership to families on Sunday citing the winter weather and low temperatures, saying the overnight conditions are expected to create icy road conditions for the morning.

“This decision has not been taken lightly, and we are grateful for our dedicated staff and teams working diligently to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” said the message.
A cold weather system, which brought inclement weather to many states on Sunday, dropped some sleet and light snow on Orange County in the afternoon. Additional precipitation is forecasted for Monday morning, with temperatures hovering in the upper 30s and low 40 degrees.
